Every time I see people on various forums praise a killbox map with intensive coloured lights and compile errors out the ass, I like this community even more.

Yeah, well as a rather new member of this forum, sure you have un noob friendly atmosphere if you come in as a noob, no community is based on giving information, well not any good community that is, all big communities are based on sharing, look at 3d buzz and cgtalk they are big as fuck (for the record, I think 3d buzz forum is a pile of turd).

I didn't get any noob unfriendliness since my first post here wasn't "how do I do ultimate leet coolness", I came here to hang around and look at others work, just by reading the threads in the engine section of the forum you can learn a thing or two.

You dig?

IRC channel is around 50, though that beats #dod with their 25. I guess since the forums are here, more people go here instead of to IRC. Growth is good, now someone needs to work on the front page ... :-D

I can't connect to Gamesurge anymore out of some reason that's why I mostly hang around here, I have to do some research on this hmm....

I agree about the frontpage, what can we do about it? Maybe frequent updates with editing news, or industry news, or both? Or just an article every one in a while? I wouldn't mind some new faces at all. Let's try to think of something.

About the newbie friendliness: You should never be harsh when criticising someone's work, but you should be honest. Which we are, we got the high standards but maybe we need to work on how to help people with that sometimes.

After all you should be able to take it when you post here though. Want core? Get core ;)

Now if only we had the damn tshirts

Indeed. ;)

There are alot of people who know their stuff, and rightfully so, they are working in the industry, so like I said, communities are based on sharing, so why don't we put up some tutorials, or long articles about something useful, they could draw people in, just look how much those 3d buzz dudes scammed in with their VTM star system.

So to be good community we need to give people something they want, we could review maps and put up a hall of fame for good maps, and give them tutorials on how to do stuff like static meshes and brushes.

I dont find it very noob unfriendly or harsh here and standards arent -that- high either but its prolly just perception some people have and once they got that...I got the same with another site Im on

You should do something that puts the name out there so people get to know the site and have a reason to go to it. Do something that gives you newsposts somewhere else, do interviews, articles, tuts, anything that can give you that

Giving people a place to upload their map to, mirror it, always works well altho you prolly dont have the bandwidth for that

Or you could make something like http://www.mapraider.com/ where you can post maps but you have to take care of your own download location. People can comment, make a map profile etc..

And you want to cover multiple communities and not just HL or so imo :)

Put the focus on showing things and not on asking questions all the time.

Why dont we let sum of our pro webdesigners work on the main page or forums? Like JonM for example do some minor adjustments (not turn it into a japanese page). Im sure ther r plenty of ppl willing to work on the front page

And remember the bigger this community the more ppl get to see ur maps=)

I like the idea of drawing in members with custom content. Something like tutorials, but not the typical " how to create a door" but maybe something about creating a rich theme and mood. Or basic level design with the figure eight.

And the front page should be updated wayyy more often. Its very discouraging to visit a site and see it hasn't been updated in six months.

Well while eating people in NS I came up with a great idea, a three part tutorial on how to create a static mesh for a map. In example like a car or something.

We could talk about the style and how do you make it fit for your map. The tutorial would be put in to three parts for concept, modelling and texturing, it would be fun if three separate people did each part of it so that we got some different ways to tacle problems.

Maybe we could get some help from our pros here.

it as been a while since i last logged in to this foruns, altough i stop here a lot to read all the threads.

For wath i gathered around other foruns, everyone thinks this site is dead, and its easy for one to think that, considering the date of the last update in the front page. But even tough everyone thinks that, this is still the site of the elite, and you can see that by the quality of the work posted on the foruns. I know many mappers would apreciate all the help and knoledge that some users around here have, but if you try to main stream the site, I think you may get the same result that interlopers.net had. At the begining the site was suposed to only have quality stuff, no "noobs" or "carving and hollow" mappers, but when hl2 camed out, and the site started to get big, that "dream" was gone. Of course it still has lots of good mappers, but also lots of starters, that sometimes ruin the comunity.

If you ask me i think it wasnt such a bad thing. But you need to sort out, if you are prepared for wath it will bring, you will start seeing lots of bad stuf around here, and you may lose your title of being the "elite site".

I still remember the reputation you had 1 or 2 years ago.

I think that wath you need to do is remake the frontpage, bring back the spotlight section, and only publicise your site on other quality sites.

First: We need a new frontpage, the forums are fine but the frontpage...i haven't even bothered to look at it for months because there's nothing new to see.

I don't like the idea of adverticing mapcore around, since this is the place for the people who can map, even a little. I know the feedback I get is worth something because the people on this forum are at least as good as I am, most are better. When you go to the average mapping forum the input you get from the map you made for months is about 5 posts like "woah, that's nice" and that's it. Meanwhile the fy_pieceofshit which was made during a coffee brake gets 20 pages of tactical analysis and 4x more downloads. This pisses me off.

Also, if a lot of new people come, they will atract more new people to come, and soon the forum will be full of people pimping their fy_twodoorsandawallinacubicle maps, spamming useless one-line posts and changing their 800x600px sized avatar once a day. People like that tend to scare all the good mappers away.

I don't mean I don't like to see mapcore growing, just do it as it goes by itself.

This thread needs some grammar and punctuation.

Jus' kidding. Yes, I'd like to see Mapcore grow, to nurture new talent, but as long as the unique camaderie we have now isn't compromised.
