Exotic Places CS:GO Mapping Contest 2019

Recommended Posts

Would I be allowed to submit a map that is publicly available, layout complete and art is WIP or am I not allowed to due to art usage?

Here is the map if you need to see whether art is too far to be considered: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1690431421

I believe there was a rule in the contest description that stated that people couldn't submit maps that are publicly available. So I think you may just have to make a new map from scratch.

It said in the rules it can be as long as it wasn't completed (layout & art) so I wanted to make sure that was usuable.

From the rules: "Maps that were under creation prior to the announcement of this Contest can be entered, as long as a complete map version (layout and art) has not been released for public download."

Wanted to know if this was still applicable.

What is the definition of "exotic" for this competition?

Probably just any theme that isn't something we've already seen, such as Dust 2 with it's Moroccan theme, Train with it's industrial theme, Overpass with it's park and canal theme, ect.

Just try and be original with your idea. Perhaps a big ol' mine with cables and metal panels hung up on the walls by wooden frames everywhere, or a friendly 1980's lookin' neighborhood, or an ancient brickworks facility from the 1800's, or a fish cannery, ect. You get the idea, just go crazy with something that we haven't experienced yet.

Multiple map entries are permitted, however each entry will be judged for its own particular quality.

It depends on where you are living. It depends on your perception. For me exotic means a place where is forever summer, something with jungle or desert.

However CS:GO "likes" visibility , low noise textures and rectangular shapes (crates, a shitload of crates and boxes), especially in the playable area. Given those factors the map theme possibilities are limited by the gameplay type of CSGO itself.

ps

jungle: de_aztec,(de_ruins);  desert: de_dust maps, and those are already old and used themes. So what else remains?

So how have y'all been fairing so far in your journeys to make a map?

I was having a little problem with the lighting in my map since it's in an abandoned building and It doesn't have lights on. Often times, these places have some natural light that is still there, but that doesn't happen in the CS:GO engine. So I came up with a solution: I now have lots of dark grey light sources that keep the area decently lit, but do a good job at making it look like there is natural ambient light like in real life as opposed to being pitch black. (Though, I do need to tweak it a bit)

    • [CS:GO] Shore
One of the projects I worked on after I made de_austria.

Yeah, I know the timing is really bad (CS2!), but can't change it... 🙁

In general a lot went wrong during this project. Had a lot of problems with the layout, but I think I found a good compromise in the end. Also learned many new things. Maybe I would even be ready to create a really good map now after all, but I think that it's gonna be the final one. I really like making maps, but it has become too time consuming over the years for just being a hobby. Unfortunately I never managed to get a job in the games industry. So that's it. I hope it's a worthy ending of 20 years of making maps for me. 🙂

Shore is a bomb defusal map for CS:GO that takes place on Lofoten Islands, Norway. (Also have a Hostage version of this that works well imo)
