kleinluka Posted May 25, 2005 Report Posted May 25, 2005 Here's an other interesting article talking about games and the games industry and its mistakes http://www.pointlesswasteoftime.com/gam ... festo.html Quote
DaanO Posted May 25, 2005 Report Posted May 25, 2005 I predict that in a few years, when making games prettier doesn't work anymore (when it gets too expensive and / or gamers think it's realistic enough), this "That means the next generation of games will likely play just like this generation. Only shiny. " will be a problem of the past. If that happens i'll sigh, thank god and then probably get on with my life. But still, it'd be good. edit: I now read all of it, and i agree. Although i do think that if jumping was combined with shooting (in fps games) it could give the player some really interesting challenges. Jump puzzles are a bit silly but they're fun. And they do work. kz_ maps are something big for hl1. That's the only thing i don't agree with. Quote
FrieChamp Posted May 25, 2005 Report Posted May 25, 2005 I don't agree on each of his points, but most of them, good read. Quote
Zacker Posted May 25, 2005 Report Posted May 25, 2005 Interesting read indeed. I don't agree with everything, but he still got a bunch of good points. Quote
DaanO Posted May 25, 2005 Report Posted May 25, 2005 So why do you people not agree? You guys aren't some crate-conservaties are ya? Quote
Pericolos0 Posted May 25, 2005 Report Posted May 25, 2005 i agree with everything this man says. Everything except for the crates though, some games just need crates Quote
Tequila Posted May 25, 2005 Report Posted May 25, 2005 i agree with everything this man says. Everything except for the crates though, some games just need crates Indeed, crates and barrels for life. He's wrong about some things though, particularly HL2's jumping puzzles or - correctly - the lack of them, but bang on about fabled game AI. Quote
Zacker Posted May 25, 2005 Report Posted May 25, 2005 1. I don't have a problem with the AI in Doom3. The rooms are small and there are not many things to cover behind, so the lacking don't really matter. 2. A brand new gametype would be cool. I am not too sure of it should be one of thoose he suggest though. 3. More ingame gfx would be nice. 4. More nipples would be nice. 5. I have yet to meet a woman. 6. Yup, save points suck. FarCry did not give you the option to the save the game and even with a such great game it was still disturbing. 7. I have absolutely no problem with some loading. Long loading times should however not occour for menus or such. Watching corporate logos sucks. 10. I don't get while he like the ridiculus magic force shield in HL2. Or maybe he was being ironic? 14. Crates are indeed a clear sign of lacking level design talent. Quote
DaanO Posted May 25, 2005 Report Posted May 25, 2005 1) He isn't talking about doom3 alone. Some awesome AI would be awesome. period. 3) Not as awesome as being outsmarted by a computer. I would be really scared if that happened. And that's good. I hardly ever feel any emotino at all hen playing computer games. 4+5) No comment. Quote
Minos Posted May 25, 2005 Report Posted May 25, 2005 He has some good points I must say but I disagree with at least 30% of what he said; Quote
ReNo Posted May 25, 2005 Report Posted May 25, 2005 Likewise. He also seemed to contradict himself a bit in places - for example he says he doesnt care about having lots of background detail as it means games require more time to develop and therefore reduces the chances of small, interesting games appearing. He then says people should build entire buildings instead of rooms to add to the immersion. He does raise a lot of mostly good points, but it is kinda interspersed with issues I personally don't have a problem with (and WOULD have an issue with if changed). For example, Auto Modellista sucked because by offering you basically all the cars/upgrades at the start for free, it offered no reason to play for long. Don't do the same to PGR or GT or something - I WANT to work my way through the different car styles to reach the top! Quote
