D3adlode Posted May 16, 2005 Report Posted May 16, 2005 Ok I thought I'd make a new topic rather than piss about with the other thread. Yes, I know just about all of you have already played it to death by now and either loved it or hated it or are somewhere in between, but I'm playing it now for the first time and it's my turn to comment! The one word that everyone uses and I'm in total agreement with is 'dark' some areas are so pitch black by the time you realise there's about 5 zombies in a corner you've already had your head ripped off! The enemies are really cool, well animated and modelled and the set pieces are really good. I still can't get over how good this game looks on my system (I'll post my system shots when I'm done), it's only on medium and to be honest I don't think there's really much difference between that and high from the screens I've seen.. One criticism is the item/enemy placement, I was in 'Communications Transfer' and I came into a room that had three Z-sec zombies in it and then two Cacodemons spawned in, followed by five imps after that. I was at 20% health and what is there to patch you up with after that big fight? A measley small med kit, to make matters worse there were like three imps in the next room too.. I just managed to make it.. just. Also it annoys me how just about everytime you pickup some health or ammo, imps spawn in to rain on your parade leaving you with less health than you started with before picking up the medkit!! I'm still impressed though, although it's not really scary (although there are some ambient sound effects that made me feel a bit uneasy) I've jumped loads of times, but ultimately the combat becomes predictable so you're prepared for demons to spawn in or for a zombie to break out of a hidden alcove in the dark. The torch/gun thing is a bit annoying but ultimately not life threatening unless you're a complete berk who can't press the 'F' key as quick as possible! Still, I'm only at the Monorail Skybridge, so I'm not even half-way through yet, so we'll see how the rest pans out. Quote
Zacker Posted May 16, 2005 Report Posted May 16, 2005 all of you have already played it to death by now and either loved it or hated it or are somewhere in between I like that sentence. I haven't got around to play the game yet, as it don't really sounds exciting to me. I think I am going to at least check it out in the following days though. Quote
Zyn Posted May 16, 2005 Report Posted May 16, 2005 A tip : use a thirdparty tool like Powerstrip, to rape the gamma, unless you like to see nothing Quote
Defrag Posted May 16, 2005 Report Posted May 16, 2005 I think the engine is fantastic, but the game is ultimately very boring. I played up until around 1/3 through the game, then I just.. stopped playing it. Then I needed space on my games partition and uninstalled Doom III. Some parts were really cool -- creepy living walls, the scary bit with the mirror and the suspense in various parts -- but the game just did not grab me. It seemed extremely formulaic and I got fed up of being jumped by zombies and various other nasties that magically appear in dead ends that I'd already cleared. Boring. It came free with my graphics card. If I'd paid for it, I would've been pissed, to be honest. Quote
Zacker Posted May 16, 2005 Report Posted May 16, 2005 I just checked it out and my first impression is good. The game does look better than on the screenshots. The engine is for sure a killer engine, especially the dynamic lighting and the bump/normal maps are well done. The text on computer screens also appear very sharp. Quote
ReNo Posted May 16, 2005 Report Posted May 16, 2005 First impressions were good, but they faded too quickly. As Defrag said, it just got painfully repetitive after a short time. For all the bad things people say about HL2's vehicle sections, the break up the gameplay and give you a bit of time with something new. Doom 3 was just endlessly getting attacked from enemies...in the dark. Atmospherically it was pretty cool (particularly playing the dark with a pair of surround sound headphones), but plain and simple, I stopped playing and uninstalled because I got bored. Quote
DanielAragon Posted May 16, 2005 Report Posted May 16, 2005 i guess it depends on who you ask, me? i got scarred shitless...i was afraid to even play that game. im 18 for gods sake! anyway, the game sucks as a game, but its good if u want to increase the flow of adrelanine to your bloostream... I agree. Quote
Lee3dee Posted May 16, 2005 Report Posted May 16, 2005 i played the game when it was first released, scared the shit out of me a few times. But, looking in dark areas and knowing that a monster was going to pop out, wore out quickly. I think if it had been less jump out scare every 2 mins, and instead heighten the experience and the story by making the encounters really come out with a bang, it could of been a very scary game. The multiplayer got old rather quickly too Play Resident Evil 4 on gamecude, that had alot of well timed scary scenes Quote
rockdude86 Posted May 16, 2005 Report Posted May 16, 2005 its a good game but its indeed to repetitive and if you ask me the graphics arent that good, ok the effects and shit are the best there are with hl2 amongst its side but if it wasnt for the game being so dark there wouldnt be shit left of it. when you walk around the levels when you have killed all the monsters you start to see so many things that could have been done better for example there are a lot of textures in the game that look like fucking crap and are low res as hell and then ofcourse the statement that it all looks like plastic and i also dont like the characters theyre all ok but nothing special they all are blocky as hell. look at the heads of the human characters their fucking low poly. and yes theres another one! the game is heavy as hell i have an amd3000+, 512 ddr pc3200, gf 6600gt, and it runs fine but its loading all the goddamn time making the game stutter like hell and no its NOT my machine i run hl2 on 1280x1024 all on high with 4xaa 4xantisotropic and it barely gets below 60fps when i did that with doom3 my machine failed misserably so is the engine all that great? yes it is but not on this generation computers they took the big step to early i think they should have waited a year or 2 resulting in more computers being able to play the game (resulting in more sales) and they could have then used more descent HIGH res textures and ofcourse the characters could be higher poly. eventhough its a freakin scary game that i (tried to) enjoy but i didnt whent further then the first few levels. when i get a pc thats a whole lot faster i will maybe try it again Quote
InsaneSingingBlender Posted May 16, 2005 Report Posted May 16, 2005 the engine is great, the game is pretty good. Quote
OL Posted May 16, 2005 Report Posted May 16, 2005 the scariest parts were when they would just have you run through a creepy place for 10 minutes with no enemies at all and then all of a sudden.... MONSTER!!!! Quote
Pericolos0 Posted May 16, 2005 Report Posted May 16, 2005 i liked it. But i stopped playing when i got to hell because... I was too scared D: the stress wasnt much fun anymore for me Quote
Thrik Posted May 16, 2005 Report Posted May 16, 2005 Doom 3: Cool, but gets old very quickly. A lot of people who praise it have not come close to finishing it. Quote
