Altered Carbon

Recommended Posts

Was coming to post about this, didn't notice the topic in the past days; just watched the first episode.

I have been waiting for Netflix to release this title and... for starters I thought was one of their exclusive movies (production seems too high for a series), also feels like the teaser was deciving. I mean I'm not swept away yet.

Never heard of the novel, but the art direction seems too Blade Runner-y. At the same time there's the contrasting feeling of connection with Demolition Man because of the story. The whole feels quite un-original :/

Loved the setting and the visuals which were really well pulled off. Not so good in terms of the story and characters. Almost as good as The Expanse so it's worth a look in my opinion.

Binge watched this over the past couple days. I think what you have to remember is this is a classic Dick Tracy (crime mystery drama) set in a dystopian neo-punk universe. Once you accept that, it becomes much more palatable.

You will never be able to move the conscience. The only thing science will be able to do is to create a bad clone of your conscience.

I don't know man, if you went 100 years in the past, and told anyone there about the lifestyle we live now, they would laugh at your face. Having all the documented human knowledge in your pocket is one that still baffles me, and one that became normality for all of us and we don't even question it. So being able to upload/move your conscience might actually not be that far fetch.
Dude, 20 years ago all news you had were local news, you had no idea what's going on. Nowadays we're being swamped by data, and who knows what will happen in 20 more years.

We still have no idea what consciousness is, for all science knows it's just a bunch of sinapses firing up and storing memories, but as we dive deeper into AI research, it might actually make us learn more about what make us tick. That said, it's very plausible that our civilization may be eradicated before we crack the meaning of consciousness, I think we human beings will probably give birth to a new species (AI) before we completely crack the puzzle of what the hell we are.

I love this quote by Marshall McLuhan : "Human beings are the sex organs of the machine world."
Cross check that quote with everything that's going on with VR, AI, Blockchains, fuckin internet, 24/7 news and where we're going starts to be a little bit more obvious. :P

Ok. But your argument can't work as you see Google and digital totalitarianism as a progress. I don't. This is your point of view. I can't speak for the people from the last centuries and which kind of lifestyle they would prefer but I'm pretty sure that we'd find people accepting that trade-off of liberty (get all your data harvested from capitalists without any fair counter party just to get free services) and others who wouldn't.

I don't understand the comparaison between Lifestyle and Google with the main subject which is "transfert consciousness" and prosaic science. You can't argue mankind walked on the moon so we'll, one day, travel to the edge of Universe. It doesn't make sense to me to be able to transfer your consciousness and be finally the same person. This would just create a bad copy of you imho. I had a quick conversation with Maria Konovalenko. She's driving her research on this subject. As nobody know if one day will be able to fully transfer a individual consciousness to a computer or another body, I was factually reacting for the common sense.

Nowadays we're being swamped by data, and who knows what will happen in 20 more years.

There is a huge gap between "transferring consciousness" and centralized distributed databases connected together.

AI research

That's mostly a buzzword. This field of research exist for 30 years. This is just our powerful machine of today better running algorithms. And algorithms are even older that what we may think. See Ada Lovelace's bio.

Blockchains

Another buzzword. And trust me I'm an expert in that field. Media and fake expert are making an inclusion to name from a chained data-structure a whole IT protocol. What's even freak me out is that disrupted third parties are making apology of a thing supposed to decentralize third parties... oh oh! xD

There's a lot of bullshit around. My point isn't we won't be able to transfert our mind to other body/computer but what is the definition of "transferring a consciousness" to another body/computer? Would you be happy to get "transferred", seeing your "transferred you" adopted by your family and figuring out that it's just a plain copy of you while you're actually dying? That'd be scary.

Just throwing this in there, but Altered Carbon reminded me of the old game Beneath a Steel Sky, similar inspirations I'm sure. I liked the series, very low key humor and decent writing, though the main plot/villain story was too stupid for me personally.
