grapen Posted June 9, 2017 Report Posted June 9, 2017 https://venturebeat.com/2017/06/07/magic-the-gathering-is-becoming-an-mmo/ MMO:s are not for me anymore, but I'll be following this with interest. Been playing MTG on and off since 1996. This could be huge considering the following MTG has. Quote
Sigma Posted June 9, 2017 Report Posted June 9, 2017 Could be huge, could be a disaster. Wizards of the Coast does not have a good track record with their digital products. Secondly, with their business model the way it is, there is almost certainly a high probability that the game will have many microtransactions requiring in-game payment with real money to be successful. Add to that the track record of Cryptic and Perfect World (not knocking them, just commenting on their chosen business models), and you have a recipe for a vindictive user base that carries over to your main products (physical) as a loss of revenues potentially. I too have been playing MTG on and off since 1996. I don't want to see this be bad, but I have many reservations about it depending on the direction it goes in. Quote
Sentura Posted June 9, 2017 Report Posted June 9, 2017 Given the publisher involved I have severe doubts that anything good will come out of this. MTG is great, but to me it's always been a staple as a draft on a boardgame evening rather than something I'd spend my free time playing. There are much better online deckbuilders out there. Quote
grapen Posted June 9, 2017 Author Report Posted June 9, 2017 Yeah I fully expect it to have plenty of microtransactions. I will say that I like what Wizards have been doing lately though, in shifting the power level of cards down, so that there are less playable mythics and more uncommon ones. They are aware of the monetary issues of the game. Should be interesting to see what they can make of the rich lore and story of MTG, I know most don't bother, but there's a ton of good writing and characters to pull from. Quote

Just give me Urza as a playable character (or NPC that I can help) and I will be happy. Quote
