[CSGO] A Mapcore/Workshop public server?

I thought it was surprising that Mapcore doesn't have a regular public server. I know there is the playtest server but that is for a specific purpose..

I think it might be a good idea for such a server to increase exposure to maps made. The CSGO community is much different to previous Counter Strike games. The majority of people play matchmaking of some sort and I feel regular DE and CS maps are not played as much, unless they are selected as part of an operation. They are not many public servers which play these maps, and if they do, it is combined with Valve made maps and a small rotation. Niche genres have always remained popular (e.g. minigames, zombie mod).

My inspiration for asking this is from playing in certain CSS communities, which had a sizable rotation of custom "regular" maps. Such as UKCS, which are still going and has no problem getting 50+ players on the server every night, on a dying game. Their rotation is around 90% custom maps.

Alternatively, I would be happy to run a server on my server machine. I have also been collecting a quality selection of workshop maps for almost 3 years (!). I did run a server before but I did not put too much effort into this so it didn't go anywhere. But potentially I would be looking for players to play on such a server (and help run it) if there is interest.

You can see my collection here: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=176838712

This whole post probably sounds incredibly silly (like a blind man in an orgy), but if anything comes out of it, then great :D

That's a pretty cool idea, go for it!

I also thought about this for quite a while but i - lazy ass - didn't start anything like that yet. I might buy a small HTPC and use it as a private server for multiple programs/games like a MC server, said CSGO server, TS server etc.

A server with a high quality/Operation worthy map rotation would be the shit! 10v10 or 5v5 tho?

Wow - it's nice that this idea has some interest already :)

I think to distinguish between the ultra serious games, I think 10vs10 would work out best?

It's interesting when you see comments on a workshop map page. I usually see three sorts of comments:

1) Spam - like my weapons etc...

2) General and constructive feedback on the map

3) People asking what servers are running this map, and the response is usually a deafening silence. Not just new maps, but maps which were once on operation cycle but no longer - some people enjoyed those maps and want to play those again.

With regards to 3, that's where I hope a server could fill the gap.

It will just depend on gaining interest and a following. If there is an initial set of regulars, then it could really kick off.

Great idea!

Like you said, previous iterations of Counter-Strike had many people playing on public servers since there was no integrated Match-making. It was fun for sure, every public server was like a little community. I still play 1.6 on Croatian/Serbian community servers sometimes and there are still quite a few players.

And custom maps deserve more attention, this is one way to showcase them.

Yeah, I really enjoyed these small cummities on each server where you could play more casucally, chat, make friends, etc.

And there are plenty of custom maps that do not get into an operation, yet deserve some love and playtime. St Mary, Coldwater, Arcade, Bagra, Fuel, Gellert just on the top of my head...

Well those communities are there in CSGO, but focused on official maps or deathmatch mod. The match-making has made things difficult for map makers (of DE and CS maps) to showcase their maps and be remembered. If it doesn't get selected for an operation, it is likely to be forgetten about in time.

And that is not the Counter Strike I remember.

I'm not a mapper but I feel as frustrated as the mappers when that happens!

So I've got a test server somewhat setup. If there are many more interested, then please post here, and we can have a blast in the next few days :D

dont know why everybody wants to make his own server so quickly.
im not sure if the playtesting server is only used at thursdays and sundays, but if this is the case, id use the playtesting server for this.
much higher chance to get a full server sometimes because everybody has this server already in their favourites. ofc playtesting server admins would need to agree.

The server might be even more crowded, if not every day (except thursday and sunday) is reserved for an unknown map evening, but only one or two.

Either way, it should be a good idea. Whether hosted by Mapcore themselves or independently.

If this discussion gives the powers to be some inspiration to make their playtest server open (or a new one) and all maps played, then great. If not, then I have the server running that collection of maps ready to go - so people can see if they like the idea of playing a mapcycle of majority/solely workshop maps. Adding a new IP is not an issue :)

Just an update I have set a test server up and its now running.

IP is 37.59.30.83:27025

A few things about it:

  • 128 Tick and 20 slots
  • A trial to see to see if people would genuinely enjoy playing on such a server. Sometimes reality does not match expectations
  • Maps rotation is on this collection: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=176838712
  • Near the end of a map, a map vote appears and you can choose a map from the list
  • Run on a mix of casual and competitive settings. Like how previous Counter Strike servers were run
  • No maps which advertise CSGO gaming/betting - those ones which have been responsible for the down voting of maps in the Workshop.

The first time you join a server running a workshop rotation, it can take a while to enter a game (a min or so). Not sure why, but when the map changes it doesn't take anywhere near as long.
