catfood Posted July 17, 2016 Report Posted July 17, 2016 A bomb-defuse map (obviously) set on a cargo ship. This time the pirates aren't planning on taking any hostages they just want to sink the damn vessel. tomm Posted July 17, 2016 Report Posted July 17, 2016 (edited) I know you're not asking for crits so I'm sorry in advance but the water seems odd to me. It looks neither like water nor ice. and it reminds me of goldsrc era liquid scrolling textures(no offense). I think you can do better. my suggestion would be to make the vessel stuck in a layer of ice and maybe keep the water/waves in a distance. I think that would be neat. just a rough draft I know this is no joke with source, but I think it would make the map much more interesting. catfood Posted July 18, 2016 Author Report Posted July 18, 2016 (edited) It's a nice approach but it wouldn`t make much sense having pirates in a area like that But thanks for your feedback its one of the reasons i'm posting the map here! I'm still working on the map so crits are welcome. Also keep in mind that the ocean is just the background (skybox) of the map. if i would add more details or shaders to the sea it would lower fps drastically and since the ocean will always be rendered while playing i'm trying to keep it as "cheap" as possible. Sprony Posted July 18, 2016 Report Posted July 18, 2016 Now this is awesome and original! I also agree about the ice comment. Who cares if it makes sense? I understand the concern regarding performance, but aren't there ways to 'fake' it? Quote

Logic Posted July 18, 2016 Report Posted July 18, 2016 Around a week ago I too had the thought of a cargo-ship theme. I'm happy I didn't think of it sooner, as this would have blown me out of the water Good job rosk and catfood 2 Quote
Guest Posted July 18, 2016 Report Posted July 18, 2016 Time to quit your mapping career, it's all over. Really though, great map as usual. Quote
catfood Posted July 18, 2016 Author Report Posted July 18, 2016 I know a few of you are releasing a map this week so I want to give you guys a headsup that i'm pretty sure someone is downvoting maps so he can get his maps on top of the workshop spotlight. I released shipped yesterday and had two downvotes until two hours ago then all of a sudden the map has 40 downvotes and now JeffCSBETS.NET has his 6 maps aim maps full with CSbetting advertisment and all with a 4 star rating and no comments on top of the workshop page. he released the maps today. I know I cant know for sure its his doing but this feels real shady. Pls don't get me wrong I can handle downvotes Im also pretty sure i can sleep tonite but this is getting out of hand and I just wanted to spread the word. It's about time Valve only allows one IP per map to vote + a Steam lvl 5 requirement or smth. like that. I'm so annoyed to see 10 minute maps in the Workshop spotlight :< catfood, Fnugz, hgn and 1 other 4 Quote

I am totally seeing this, I wouldn't doubt that its him doing it. I see more than 6 climbing the most popular (week) and shipped isn't even on the first page of it. Fnugz, catfood and Vaya 3 Quote
catfood Posted July 18, 2016 Author Report Posted July 18, 2016 50min later and now it's at 113 downvotes... wth rosk 1 Quote
Skybex Posted July 18, 2016 Report Posted July 18, 2016 Vote manipulation has been going on for a while now unfortunately, some of my maps were hit by it as well but lucky only small scale to knock me off the top spot. If you released at the same time as certain skin authors or other maps even, you could expect quite a few downs by them. But with these gambling sites now using the workshop as a means to spam their ads, you can expect a downvote from each of their bots which can result in downvotes in the hundreds. Doubt valve will do anything to address the issue as its pretty clear they don't hold the voting system in high regard. The workshop has been a mess for a long time now. K, catfood and Radix 3 Quote

I think this because actual good maps are reaching the front page for a little while and then just buried under piles and piles of aim maps just renamed for different guns, take this one for instance; what makes it Glock and AWP specific? Its almost if they see making an aim_map as an opportunity to make some money by people donating. Also around 80% of comments on my older maps are all just "check out this skin" or "nice skin check out my one". catfood and The Horse Strangler 2 Quote
The Horse Strangler Posted July 18, 2016 Report Posted July 18, 2016 I wouldn't worry about votes guys, valve doesn't really use them to filter. If a map is good they'll notice. Besides, they probably skip all the pages with aim maps anyways, so votes def don't matter in that regard. Onto the map, looks pretty killer dude, I remember seeing a dev version a few months ago, seeing it progress into this final version is pretty rad, tons of work went into it for sure. On the note about the Ocean I partially agree, mostly because I've been there and done that, achieving an ocean in source doesn't come with many options that are performance sensitive. I think applying some specularity to the ocean will help drive it's realism a long way tho, maybe try giving it a normal as well? As for the rest of the map there's a lot of really nice touches to both the atmosphere and narrative of the environment. I think the only thing I think is a concern in the art department is that you might want to try and push the fidelity a bit more on a lot of your custom assets. Almost everything seems to have a consistent envmap intensity (especially in the dark areas), applying phong to a bunch of stuff will really help give those assets some more life.
