Radix Posted August 25, 2015 Report Posted August 25, 2015 (edited) ArcadeA bomb defuse map set in a mediterranean village.Visual stile is similar to the official maps italy and inferno, but gameplay is a little different to most maps. I tried to make the bombsites more accessible for Ts than usual and on the other hand CT gamelay is a lot more centralized, which gives plenty of map control to a single player.I have already published this map last year, but I have made a couple of changes and tweaks. Unfortunately didn't get a lot of feedback. Maybe I'm a little bit late here, but I hope that this contest could give me some additional feedback.Workshop link: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=320674385 Edited August 25, 2015 by Raidix Logic, Lizard, Vilham and 3 others 6 Quote
Quotingmc Posted August 25, 2015 Report Posted August 25, 2015 (edited) imo the name makes no sense. When I think of an arcade I think of the seaside with slot machines and flashing lights not an Mediterranean village. Edited August 25, 2015 by Quotingmc Bad Spelling Logic 1 Quote
Logic Posted August 25, 2015 Report Posted August 25, 2015 (edited) Sorry about this but again, the name? The first thing that pops up in my head when someone says the word arcade is a room full of kids and games. Other than that the map looks really nice! I guess those blue areas are underground huh? I'd say the map has a few too many routes though, especially to/from B. Edited August 25, 2015 by Logic Quotingmc 1 Quote
Radix Posted August 25, 2015 Author Report Posted August 25, 2015 I guess those blue areas are underground huh? That's right. I'd say the map has a few too many routes though, especially to/from B.One "route" is blocked by a fence, so it's actually 3 entrances to B. I know that it looks more complicated on the overview than it actually is. I am aware that the name is probably misleading to some people. I'm not a native speaker, so I didn't know that many people think of a video games arcade when they read "arcade". To me it was just a "series of adjoining arches" (which would fit pretty well to the map).Well, funny times when people think of something on their desktop when you talk about a "window" instead of something you can look through. However maybe it's time to change the name. Unfortunately I didn't find a better name which isn't already used. So suggestions are welcome... Quote

I'm unable to test the map for a few more days so don't take my full advice when it comes to the layout x)However maybe it's time to change the name. Unfortunately I didn't find a better name which isn't already used. So suggestions are welcome...Try grabbing two names and combine them together. Maybe a city from Spain and one from Italy. The town can be entirely fictional Zaragoza + Venezia = ZarenziaOr just make something up that sounds believable: Carenzia, Gautanja, Sevolla, Patricia, Povollo etc. I don't know if any of these actually exist... Just made some up on the spot. Radix 1 Quote
jackophant Posted August 25, 2015 Report Posted August 25, 2015 (edited) Please don't make anything up.When you say "Mediterranean" town, I'm hoping you don't mean inferno. You must have looked at locations for reference. Work on that basis if anything. But in all honesty, your use of the name arcade is absolutely fine. It's where an "amusement arcade" gets it's name from, so it's just a victim of it's own popularity.I think the name is fine, but you will have a lot of "where are the arcade machine" questions, so only change it if that bothers you EDIT: there may be competition issues with the inferno bell tower construction being ripped straight out of the map as the majority of it is brush work not a model. Worth checking on though. Edited August 25, 2015 by jackophant Mark C., Radix and Vaya 3 Quote
Logic Posted August 25, 2015 Report Posted August 25, 2015 Please don't make anything up.Why does it have to be a real location? Quote
Radix Posted August 27, 2015 Author Report Posted August 27, 2015 EDIT: there may be competition issues with the inferno bell tower construction being ripped straight out of the map as the majority of it is brush work not a model. Worth checking on though. It's just one prop + 4 trigger brushes to make the bells sound when you shoot them. The whole tower (above the lower trim) is one (skybox) model.I can try to change it, if this is not okay for the contest. But I can't make custom props yet, so it would probably look pretty poor. Andre Valera Posted August 28, 2015 Report Posted August 28, 2015 (edited) When I first heard Dust, I didn't think of castles made from sand or Middle Eastern themed buildings. When I heard of Sienna I didn't think of the color, instead I figured Dave spelled Siena with an extra n.Thanks to DasErsteOpfer for opening our brains to a new concept. I also think it's interesting that we're spending so much time critiquing map names instead of map game play.I still wonder how FMPone decided to go from a warehouse theme Volcano established to the Chernobyl setting when working on a map called "cache"... Quotingmc Posted August 28, 2015 Report Posted August 28, 2015 I still wonder how FMPone decided to go from a warehouse theme Volcano established to the Chernobyl setting when working on a map called "cache"...The story behind cache is that the terrorist are trying to destroy a weapons Cache iirc hence the weapon crates on Bombsite b and the armoured car in the box on A site. Thanks to DasErsteOpfer for opening our brains to a new concept. I also think it's interesting that we're spending so much time critiquing map names instead of map game play.I think any criticism is good. Many maps are getting no feedback at all and a name means a lot to a map. When you look at the workshop all you get is a single screenshot and the name. Half of whether you decided to look at the map further is the name so I think having a strong and related one is key. Radix 1 Quote
