Erratic Posted November 16, 2013 Report Posted November 16, 2013 (edited) They don't require as much raw reaction time though. CS/Q3/Starcraft I/II are far more demanding on just an input level than dota. There's just that initial knowledge base that throws up that wall and I guess if you aren't familiar with War3 mechanics it's even steeper. I'd say they're more approachable than a shooter, since they're a balance of input/knowledge/strategy, with the latter 2 being the heaviest. I consider my self pretty good at the video games and counter strike/Quake 3 scares the living shit out of me far more than any dota-like game ever has. Taylor Posted November 16, 2013 Report Posted November 16, 2013 So, what are the AoS games crowding this space? DotA, DotA2, LoL, HoN, HotS is five and one of those isn't released yet.I'm not sure I'd count things like Bloodline Champions or Smite because they play a lot differently. It seems like for a "crowded genre" it's nowhere near the numbers of first person shooters and fighting game franchises out there. I can name single fighting game franchises that have had more than five releases since LoL appeared. Quote
Erratic Posted November 16, 2013 Report Posted November 16, 2013 I guess for a genre that's only been recognized outside of mods for just a few years it's had its share of games announced since then. The impression you get is that every one and their sister is trying to get one out there. And what's it only been, 4 years since League came out? I certainly can't mistake anyone for thinking it's crowded but when you look at what's actually there it's relatively sparse. I guess you could add Dawngate to that list as well, it seems more in line than something like Smite. Which I played the tutorial of and feel my conclusion of 'yep that's dota in third person and it's as awkward as you would expect' was pretty accurate. Pro game developer mentality right here. I might even watch a youtube of it to further develop my opinion Quote
FMPONE Posted November 16, 2013 Report Posted November 16, 2013 I'm not saying it's crowded yet, but when people see what LoL is doing, yeah it's going in that direction. Quote
LiVinGHeLL Posted November 19, 2013 Report Posted November 19, 2013 I was at blizzcon and was able to line up with 9 other people and play 2 games of in house 5v5. The big differences from the other mobas are as follows: XP is team shared - everyone is the same level on a team. There are no items - everything is based around the skill build you choose. At certain levels (1,3,6? I cant remember) you get the option to choose 1 of 3 upgrades. For example, you may be able to choose to have 15% stronger heals or 15% stronger damage. The entire game is based around 5v5 team fights and map objectives. No one is off fucking around with neutral creep mobs in the jungle. Its a refreshing look at the genre. Minos Posted November 6, 2014 Author Report Posted November 6, 2014 Anyone playing Heroes? I've been playing it everyday at lunch for months now, fucking love it. Just curious to see what the core thinks! Quote
holiestcows Posted November 6, 2014 Report Posted November 6, 2014 Anyone playing Heroes? I've been playing it everyday at lunch for months now, fucking love it. Just curious to see what the core thinks! I have yet to play it, but from what I have seen, I think it can be so much better, but has had some overall design choices that make is just not that good. Hearth Stone which to me is the most casual of any game but still has some sense of competitiveness to it, while when I look at HotS I cant fathom on how it could be any more competitive than like Strife or Dawngate, those 2 other F2P Mobas. No offence. Quote

It makes a big difference to be playing with friends in the same room though, since it's much easier to coordinate. If anyone wants to try the game give me a shout and I can see if I can get an invite holiestcows 1 Quote
