RD Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 d3adlode lives in a gothic fantasy where quake1 and 2 were scary. In reality the single player experiences of both games were appalling and not scary at all. The superb monsters were actually lame ripoffs of doom1's incredibly nervewrecking zombiemarine. The only superb thing of the whole Quake series is quake2 multiplayer Quote
D3adlode Posted March 15, 2005 Author Report Posted March 15, 2005 If you like good single player, why are you a big Quake fan? I'm sure most would agree that Quake games, while perfectly enjoyable, aren't exactly sterling demonstrations of single player gameplay design. Stroggos was quite a nicely realised heavy industrial planet, with plenty of beefy and "hard" feeling locations that felt convincing at the time, but by the same hand Doom 3 did high tech very nicely (if very repetitively). The reason you don't see many more places looking like Stroggos, is probably something to do with Stroggos being overly simplistic (yes, due to the tech restrictions of the time period). I don't think you can say, from the limited screenshots that have been shown, that we are going to see purely rectangular doors, no lava, and no objectives. Doom 3 had an objective system every bit as complex as Quake 2's anyway, though both seemed to tag interesting sounding objectives to some generic action. I never said I was a 'big fan', I merely mentioned hardcore fans having seen the shots will recoil in horror.. Ok, I'm being harsh, it doesn't look BAD, it's quite pretty, but it doesn't look like Stroggos did and technological setbacks is no excuse for changing the appearance of things, if I want Doom III I'll play Doom III, if I want Stroggos I'll play Quake 2 or IV.. makes sense, no? If I'm honest I think that the Doom III engine is only capable of environments such as... well.. Doom III, something that goes against pulling off the kind of atmosphere Stroggos had for the second time. I agree on objectives though, but then neather game pushes the boundaries in that field. i can see where you're coming from and i understand but dude it sounds like you're kidding yourself... this unique alien world of rusty metal, red flags, barren rocks and flashing red screens populated with creatures made from dead humans and other species, the sky was a dark brooding red informing the player that this place is anything but friendly and you're going to get fucked-up pretty bad unless you keep your alert on at all times. this passage reads a lot like you're describing doom3 ;X i don't blame them for porting d3 shit to q4 but i don't expect it to be any good. if they pull off a solid MP game i'll be duly impressed. d3 is a steaming heap (albeit bump & spec'd) D: Bad description perhaps, but if you've played the game you'll understand what I mean, the way it's displayed is in a league of it's own. RD, you're so wrong it's hilarious... Quote
D3adlode Posted March 15, 2005 Author Report Posted March 15, 2005 suprised KFS hasn't responded yet. Maybe his NDA prevents him from doing so. I didn't know he worked for Ravensoft D: Quote
st0lve Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 Please just list what you do know He worked there for a long time now. Quote
D3adlode Posted March 23, 2005 Author Report Posted March 23, 2005 Now this is more like it, The Outer Base level rendered in Doom III by Kiltron, clicky on a thumbnail for a larger image: Click for full screen Click for full screen Click for full screen Click for full screen Click for full screen Click for full screen What do we all think? Personally I think he has the right idea, but some of the textures look like ass and those flags look too small, plus upon checking the download pk4, he uses the old 256 'unit1_' sky env which looks a bit blurred. With some better textures and lack of standard Doom III props, it could be something special, I especially like the idea of the pipes in the mud, nice touch. This was meant to be part of a remake of Quake II on the Doom III engine but he quit the project because of the limitations, hopefully Raven will address those issues to bring us what we want. Now all we need is for some official Quake IV forums so we can voice our opinions Quote
Euro*Brew Posted March 23, 2005 Report Posted March 23, 2005 Quake always seemed so generic to me. It was always just there and seemed bland. Ambience was good but as a whole it was never anything spectacular. I'd rather see an updated sequel to the game Heretic or Hexen. Euro*Brew Quote
DaanO Posted March 23, 2005 Report Posted March 23, 2005 Reminds me of Doom. And whatever crappy generic industrial games have been made before. I am very unimpressed. Quote
ginsengavenger Posted March 23, 2005 Report Posted March 23, 2005 yeah tbh that looks rather ass to me. :/ Quote
RD Posted March 23, 2005 Report Posted March 23, 2005 But Quake is d3's childhood, he grew up with it. Quake is his parents and stroggos his buddy Quote
D3adlode Posted March 24, 2005 Author Report Posted March 24, 2005 You only refer to them as 'crappy generic industrial games' because many games have done the theme a lot better and incorperated lots of features etc, back when Quake II came out, there was nothing else like it around at the time. I didn't actually get to play Q2 till after Half-Life, but it didn't make the experience any less satisfying although HL is definately the superior game. You have to like Quake games, if you don't like Quake, you can't call yourself a FPS fan, that's a fact. Quote
DaanO Posted March 24, 2005 Report Posted March 24, 2005 I'm not talking about QII and all that stuff, but about QIV. If this is still the only thing they can come up with that's just, well, not good. If that were CS i'd tell them nubs to go make a map with an actual theme Quote

If that were CS i'd tell them nubs to go make a map with an actual theme Well in all fairness, Q2 fans have demanded a sequel for ages now so it was going to happen at some point. ID aren't making it though, that's Raven's job, ID are working on an as yet untitled project. ID games have always been out-of-this-world, I think it would be odd if they were to say make Max Payne 3 or something like that... Quote
D3adlode Posted March 25, 2005 Author Report Posted March 25, 2005 It appears some of you are confused, let me clear this up for you: THE SCREENSHOTS ABOVE ARE NOT FROM QUAKE IV, THEY ARE FROM A USER-MADE MAP DONE FOR DOOM III SP You want Q IV shots, go google 'Quake IV' kthxbai. Quote
