tomm
Although cinema 4D is a fantastic 3d package, I would not recommend using it for game art simply because of its poor support of game formats.. I'm talking from my experience. You will have a hard time finding a source exporter for c4d. Luckily source does support *.obj format, which is great.. it has its limitations though.. only a single UV set and no bones/animations but it does support smoothing groups, which is really all you need if you want to export a simple mesh. Another problem is collisions have to be in an *.smd format, and that's where you'll have troubles with c4d. Anway, I would recommend reading through valve's docs https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Compiling_a_model

Squad
I can only recommend Shawn's WallWorm Model Tools! If you're going with 3DSMAX, this is what you need. shawnolson
