Wtf happened to Chrome?

My dad went to use Google Chrome on his PC today and found that it had completely changed, gone is the old browser window ala Firefox (which is what I use) and now it seems like it's turned into an app and gone full retard! Sometimes it just loads a purple screen and does nothing so I have to kill it and other times it loads the grey screen with the icons on the bottom left. Opening the chrome icon loads up the browser but some of the settings are missing like the old tools menu. Another issue is the desktop shortcuts he's had to various sites for years no longer work, they just load up the damn start box! How is everyone else who uses Chrome finding this? Is there anyway to go back to just having the browser? It gives me a bloody headache, I hope Mozilla don't do this!

That's the Windows 8 app.  Go to the burger menu (the one below the close button), then hit "Relaunch in Desktop Mode" or whatever

It worked! Thanks a lot!..  I tried that before and it just loaded the purple screen... how did the windows 8 app activate? he's using windows 8.1...

Man I worked for Google a couple mouths. Avoid this shit as much as you can. If you were talking about Chrome the browser anyway go Chromium.
