Doc_Brown Posted November 25, 2014 Report Posted November 25, 2014 Are there any modelers present who use Maya? Specifically for use with Source engine games? I've asked around on a few different forums, but it seems most people prefer to use other programs instead. I ask because I've used Maya to create a model for a Left 4 Dead campaign I'm working on. I'm not a modeler, mind you--this is just a case of necessity--but it would be nice if I could find someone to bounce a few questions off of when it comes to exporting and compiling for use in-game. Alternatively, if anyone knows of a better place to go asking these questions, it'd be appreciated. Quote
Sigma Posted November 26, 2014 Report Posted November 26, 2014 I don't personally use Maya currently, but I can say that I have not seen any tools come out akin to WallWorm for 3DS Max that allows for easy compiling. Because of this, I think you will most likely have to do your compiling the long method with the various programs present in your L4D2 directory (to create the VMT.'s and VTF.'s). There are certainly guides out there to help you through this process, although they can be quite convulated and/or out of date to the modern process. If all else fails, you might try emailing members of Valve's art department to see if they have experience with a Maya to L4D2 workflow and if they can provide any assistance. Just my $ .02. Quote
El Moroes Posted November 26, 2014 Report Posted November 26, 2014 (edited) You have this exporter on Maya : MESA It's not the best exporter but it works. I think the best tool to do what you want is WORMS TOOL on 3Ds Max. Edited November 26, 2014 by El Moroes Quote
Doc_Brown Posted November 28, 2014 Author Report Posted November 28, 2014 Thanks for the replies, gentlemen. As you said, Sigma, the guides that are online aren't the most... comprehensible. That's actually part of the reason I haven't tried MESA yet, El Moroes; it seemed even more convulated (at least the setup) than studiomdl and the like. For the time being I shall continue to play around with my various options, see if I can't luck out and get it to work. Speaking of which, here's what I made: It's not the greatest, of course, but then again I'm not a modeler. We'll see if I can't actually get it in-game. Quote
Az_ Posted December 5, 2014 Report Posted December 5, 2014 Hey Doc_Brown, I wrote a guide on how to get models from Maya to Source, originally for the PV2K devs but all you need to do is to change the paths to the L4D ones. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OA6U7vmY7Pc18nK2nN3tQZTVdLDAoX6FjZIy11mTpmQ/edit?usp=sharing If you have any questions, let me know. Doc_Brown Posted December 9, 2014 Author Report Posted December 9, 2014 Many thanks! I'll give this a read through, see if I can get it to work for me, and let you know how it goes. Quote
