I love the TF2ish kinda look its got going on, it looks really nicely rendered, but I can't help but feel like this is a game I won't enjoy from a gameplay point of view. I'm not saying it doesn't look good, just that it's not really appealing to me as an FPS.

 

I think it's because in first person you're focusing more on aiming your weapon and it's more precision-skill based (ie, you have to hit your target), whereas in top-down MOBA games, it's more about where you are on the map and getting map control, fights are less about having pinpoint accuracy, and more about the skill of how you use your specific attacks etc. I understand that doesn't make a great deal of sense heh, because obviously you need map control etc in Overwatch.

 

Plus as well, I think what makes TF2 so great is that you have a core set of like 8 classes or whatever it is, and the enemy you're going against is always very readable and you know exactly what kinda class you're fighting, whereas in this there are so many different classes and each one is completely different, that it might be a bit confusing (Yep, again, you could say the same with a MOBA!).

 

Anyway, I hope this doesn't come across like I'm being negative towards the game, it's just not really appealing to me. I'm definitely going to give it a go though because I felt like Heroes of the Storm wasn't going to be much fun, until I actually played it! Any word on alpha/beta?

 

Edit - Errrgrh just re-read it and it sounds kinda dickish. I really hope it doesn't come across that way! I'm by no means belittling any of the work you guys are doing, it looks incredible :)

I really enjoy the artstyle and how each class performs with eachother, going alone is a death sentence in this game as Zenyatta will slap on a orb of discord and then any class can take you down in a few seconds.

In what I've seen for this game though, people call it a TF2 clone because it has classes and the medic has a 'med-gun' but just slapping on the term TF2 clone or even TF2 based game is not really a fair statement to make on Overwatch, at least in my opinion as that game has essentially killed itself over the past couple of years and updates, its comsetics over gameplay now and you can't play on a server without everyone doing a conga line, then getting yelled at because you wanted to play like intended.

The maps do look pretty great.

I've gotta say though, I've yet to see a single character that I like. In terms of "personality" they seem really annoying and quite vapid, and in terms of visual design it seems to be a case of quantity (of design features/aspects) over quality.

I think it's fine, the cartoonish style works and the gameplay seems mostly aimed towards casual play, and right now I am seeing lots of people are giving up on Dirty Bomb because of lack of working anticheat (competitive mode is often hackers vs hackers), many issues (you could teleport with a console command ffs), and slow updates, praying that Overwatch being the next big thing ... unless of course Splash Damage fixes the current major issues. But for that to happen, Overwatch needs tools for the competitive scene such as good spectator HUD, demotools, and dedicated server software. However with the outrageous abilities and whatnot, it might just be as fun TF2 competitive: like watching paint dry.

With that said, lets find ways to fall into a coma and wake up in October for the beta ... maybe.
