blackdog Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 1$ for 10mb doesn't seem cheap at all, a photoshop file is easily larger than that. Quote
aaaaasdasdasdasdasda Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 (edited) Why not have it split a little. All the big binary stuff hosted on something simple like dropbox. The smaller data stuff on whatever version control needed. I figure the things like models and textures would have less collaborative work than the code or levels. TheOnlyDoubleF Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 If we split, the risk is that people won't have the all project and we will surely face problems with objects references and integration etc blackdog 1 Quote
SuperDuperYeah Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 Yep... the only true problem with each project I was on was texture weight. I'm slowly working onto integrating Substance Designer in our art pipeline for my current project and I think it might help us here too. Also this kind boils down at how good our tech art pipeline is going to be. I'm a pretty big fan of highly tweakable master materials that you can instance. Quote
tomm Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 I'd much rather use a source control, but this seems like a pretty good solution too imo: from: http://www.reddit.com/r/UE4Devs/comments/23cbim/tutorial_unreal_engine_4_source_control_using/ TheOnlyDoubleF 1 Quote
TheOnlyDoubleF Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 We should first agree on what we're gonna produce and organize a brainstorm on skype or mumble and then choose the team roles. blackdog 1 Quote
blackdog Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 Personally I hate Dropbox. I only used it for our two silly mobile games but it was a pain, forcing an update as soon as you boot a computer, when there were huge updates would basically prevent me from working until it was finished. Dunno if they changed stuff, but I'm under the impression that it simply replaces files instead of up/downloading the differences. I see it good only for exchanging files, like a place where to drop builds, media, not to manage a project. Quote

Sprony Posted October 24, 2014 Author Report Posted October 24, 2014 Good discussion but a bit presumptuous since we haven't even formed a team, created a concept or decided on what we are going to make Quote
RaVaGe Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 What if we do something like this shitty movie ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanishing_on_7th_Street Story plot : Space, alone, manage to find light or die. I think it would be really great, trying to don't loose the light while solving puzzle, non violent but you can easily die and only one goal but a very important one. Squad, Corwin and Sprony 3 Quote
AlexM Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 1$ for 10Mb seems really expensive We used SVN for content on Firearms source. It worked but it helped that we had sponsors to pay for our server because we probably used a terabyte of space Quote
aaaaasdasdasdasdasda Posted October 25, 2014 Report Posted October 25, 2014 The idea for a Blue Shift recreation is great, especially if we can use the Black Mesa content. It seems like a good first project since it's not too big. Although, wouldn't there be a bit of creative restraint if we're to keep the same theme as Black Mesa? Quote

I think RiouxSVN would be used for long term personal projects (no subscription). I was looking up Cloudforge. Professional version is 10$/user/month. 1 user is 5gb. (1 terabyte... ... ... wha). AlexM Posted October 25, 2014 Report Posted October 25, 2014 bitbucket is unlimited and free for 5 people. Probably gets expensive after that. If I buy a new computer in the near future I might be able to setup my existing one as a perforce server. If we don't use it excessively it should be fine. I'm spending the next couple weeks determining how perforce would integrate with U4 either way so I'll know then a lot better if it's a good solution. As for the source engine, the great thing about the source engine is it plays great with pretty much any source control. It's like the opposite of Unity (which is a nightmare for this kind of stuff) Seldoon182 1 Quote
blackdog Posted October 25, 2014 Report Posted October 25, 2014 (edited) Don't most of hostings now give unlimited space? I'm gonna get again a personal space and domain in the near future, in case it's possible to install a version system I wouldn't have any problem in hosting. Edited October 25, 2014 by blackdog Quote
