Em' Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 (edited) I personaly think hat Notch is overated and that minecraft success is more due to comunity mods and supports rather to the awesome gamedesigner people says Notch is. It would take less $ to start from scratch and make a real minecraft like than to buy this one and expect new sales... Edited September 11, 2014 by Em' -HP- and Jord 2 Quote
Nysuatro Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 Sure thing. But that is no really the point. They buy Minecraft, not notch. So they do not only buy a game, they buy an IP. There are enough clones of Minecraft Quote
FrieChamp Posted September 12, 2014 Report Posted September 12, 2014 All of this doesn't make much sense to me but the fact that notch still hasn't commented on the story only makes it more believable. Quote
FMPONE Posted September 12, 2014 Report Posted September 12, 2014 I think it makes a lot of sense. 2 billion dollars is monopoly money, it's like, well, it's like 2 billion dollars. That amount of money would be hard for anyone to resist, to do just about anything. So I'm not surprised to see Notch sell his big claim to fame, if that's what ends up happening. It is just slightly sad though, something about it. Something seems kind of wrong there, but if everybody gets what they want, and Notch is tired of maintaining the game, maybe everybody wins. Quote

The thing is: he doesn't even maintain the game anymore. Jeb has been in charge of it for years. notch has been tinkering on new projects (that frankly haven't lead to anything substantial yet). The guy has made many millions - and yes, I know, more millions are always better - but even if his attitude has come across as snobbish at times, he always seemed to be very genuine and outspoken. He has often talked about how he wants Mojang to be best studio to work for in the world and made his disdain of big corporations public at numerous occasions (he cancelled the Rift version of Minecraft after Facebook picked up Oculus etc.). I was thinking, maybe the other shareholders want to cash out, but rumor has it that notch instigated the deal. Him being burnt out or a general discontent with making games under the microscope is my best guess at the moment. Nysuatro 1 Quote
Mazy Posted September 12, 2014 Report Posted September 12, 2014 If it turns out to be true, then the only surprising thing about this is how he came off as being super holy and indie like in regards to Facebook buying Oculus VR and being disgusted with them selling out, only to basically do the exact same thing himself a month or so later. I have no problem with him being against Facebook buying Oculus, but it's pretty hypocritical for him to go through with this kind of thing then, especially if this deal was underway at the time of that comment. Anyway, for 2 billion dollaz you'd be insane not to sell it now, seriously doubt he'll ever get a better deal than that. Sprony and Warby 2 Quote
Jord Posted September 12, 2014 Report Posted September 12, 2014 I don't think I'd mind being called a hypocrite by the internet for $1.4billion in the bank ChA1NsAw, Warby, Sprony and 3 others 6 Quote
blackdog Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 On one side he doesn't look like the guy who would do that, but to me Minecraft looks really close to saturation, I don't see how anyone will be able to maintain it's popularity… so this is probably the best deal ever for Notch. Then he can still do stuff if he's passionate. Don't understand why MS have to buy Mojang, can't they just sell the rights of the IP? What is MS gonna do, a next-gen version of it that ppl won't like to play because of the graphics? Quote
Taylor Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 Pretty hypocritical after the Oculus Rift shit. But you can hypocritical me all night for 2 billion. Quote
Sprony Posted September 14, 2014 Report Posted September 14, 2014 All valid points guys, but seriously, for 2 billion you can make me your bitch. Quote
Buddy Posted September 14, 2014 Report Posted September 14, 2014 I dont think i would be any happier with 2 billion now instead of what i have. -HP- 1 Quote
Taylor Posted September 14, 2014 Report Posted September 14, 2014 I'm confident I would be happier with 2 billion dollars. Worst case scenario everything is the same, but I shop at M&S instead of the Co-op. Psy and AyzOn 2 Quote
Skjalg Posted September 14, 2014 Report Posted September 14, 2014 Notch has always said that his price is 2 billion dollars. Anyway, my price is two billion dollars. Give me two billion dollars, and I'll endorse your crap. -Notch 2012 Plus, he has gotten over the oculus buyout being a bad thing. Quote

Afaik Notch never took any outside investment because everything was funded out of cash flows. I thought I heard some employees have stock in the company, but the total amount doesn't add up to much leaving Notch as the only significant shareholder by a large margin (ie over 90 or 95%)... ....lest ye, Frie, have some other knowledge ye doth hast withholdeth? Think he has a bit less than that: "Persson controls about 71% of Mojang, according to the annual reports of the Stockholm-based game maker and Persson’s holding company Notch Enterprises AB." Still...I think he'll be ok... Quote
