AyzOn Posted August 13, 2014 Report Posted August 13, 2014 (edited) I once mentioned to other people what I really want to be. It was awful... Edited August 13, 2014 by AyzOn Quote
Sentura Posted August 13, 2014 Report Posted August 13, 2014 Hilarious. Until computers gain actual sapience, we'll be OK. Society will adapt, as it has so many times before. Quote
JeanPaul Posted August 13, 2014 Report Posted August 13, 2014 This is relevant on two different levels Quote
AtsEst Posted August 13, 2014 Report Posted August 13, 2014 Most if not all of the stuff talked about there will have a chance to become a reality, outside of a neat tech demo, in the latter half of the next decade. Automating stuff out side of anything from a very controlled, sterile environment poses huge engineering challenges, many of which we have still not discovered yet. Sentura 1 Quote
Steppenwolf Posted August 13, 2014 Report Posted August 13, 2014 This is only a horror scenario in a world of unregulated capitalism. In an ideal world the wealth generated by the robots will be taxed adequately and distributed to the population. Maybe then 20 hour weeks will be the norm and lots of vacation days. -HP- and Sentura 2 Quote
RaVaGe Posted August 13, 2014 Report Posted August 13, 2014 Anyone ever wondered about what we could do without a job ? Even if I don't like that much to work, I trully don't know what else I could do during my life, weird isn't it ? -HP-, Jord and Sentura 3 Quote

Im losing confidence in our ability to arrive at this kind of a solution. It seems like income inequality is just growing, and government is more and more carrying water for the same businesses it's supposed to regulate. In other words, what were dealing with really resembles unfettered capitalism. Anyone ever wondered about what we could do without a job ? Even if I don't like that much to work, I trully don't know what else I could do during my life, weird isn't it ? This is also what disturbs me. If machines truly are going to be smarter and more creative than humans, it's almost like we've lost all reason to exist, and it only makes sense for the machines to decide to remove us. If they didn't, I guess we carry on, but life would surely feel somewhat strange knowing we have no constructive purpose anymore, because a higher life form is in charge and making all of our decisions for us. It reminds me of animals in a zoo, existing because we allow them to, a true sign of being low on the food chain if there ever was. Thurnip 1 Quote
Thurnip Posted August 13, 2014 Report Posted August 13, 2014 (edited) ^ agreed. And all the technological advancements in food and goods production didn't made the wealth inequity better...It's not a problem of technology, but is a problem how the technology is used.I feel that i said something very obvious. Sorry about that.edited:RaVaGe and fmpone posts appeared between mine and steppenwolf's. Not complaining about that.and Edited August 13, 2014 by Thurnip FMPONE and ChA1NsAw 2 Quote

So what, you don't think people will actually try and migrate outside of society? If robots take up all the workforce, then there's no need for humans where the robots are. That doesn't mean there won't be places on the planet where there aren't robots. We're not going to industrialize the planet overnight, and certain places will likely remain the same for a long, long time even when the robots taking our jerrrbs have arrived. Quote

I think there will be some second wave communism or fascism eventualy overthrowing this system. And maybe when that is over mankind will look into a brighter future. Quote

I kinda see us going in the opposite direction even if we hit some bumps on the way. Internet gives humanity unprecedented access to information and education, which in the long run will generate more "great people", or simply just more people doing the right thing. At some point, when we get robots to do our shit and we are more economically independent, governments will become irrelevant, probably turning into service providers instead of the big cumbersome institutions that tell people what to do that we have today. Even if I don't agree with all his views and think that he's full of shit most of the time, this movie can give some ideas of what to expect in the future: Fun fact: that guy is now a director of engineering at Google. They are definitely working towards making his ideas true if you observe their behavior in the past years. -HP- 1 Quote
FMPONE Posted August 14, 2014 Author Report Posted August 14, 2014 But isn't the ultimate issue AI being smarter than us? How can that end up being anything but a disaster? Thankfully I think we're all a little too old to grapple with that during our lifetimes, I think that problem will fall on our kids. Quote
