KoKo5oVaR Posted June 15, 2014 Report Posted June 15, 2014 Hey guys ! I didn't really knew where to put this, but i wanted to share a personal project I am "working" on with you. After seeing eyes wide shut which impressed me a lot, but which was very obscure in my first watch, I thought there must be something more readable in the shots compositions of the movie. So I have started on a never ending project of selecting the shots i find interesting and deconstruct visually the compositions of the whole movie. I know. That sounds very monomaniac. Not sure if my method is the best, but basically what you have first is the clean shot, and if you hover your mouse cursor onto the picture, you will see a simplified/painterly version of the image ( so you don't have to squint at it ;p) which will let you see silhouettes, contrasts and colors more easily, and then with lines my personal interpretation of the composition. I say personal because they are probably not all just and i might sometimes interpret a bit too much, or not in a good way. ( I also wanted to add a black&white version to see nuances more clearly, but... but i need to think about it ) So far i thought of just putting images there, i may consider adding text and more explanations on the art direction consistency (lots of triangles lololol), but i didn't want to get myself too much into influencing people interpretations. What do you guys would think about that ? Ofcourse there is no sounds, no movements, and they should be making a whole with the picture. So there's a lot missed. I may be reviewing my method because of this. So if you have any interest in cinema, photography... or even if you are a leveldesigner/level artist, i think that may be interesting to learn a bit about narrative visual and the uses of symbolic; in a Kubrick movie that is. There's just 17 minutes of the movie, and i found so much interesting shots, it's crazy, nothing is out there randomly. But damn that gives me a lot of work. Just the three scenes i made so far : (watch out first pic contains Nicole Kidman ass) http://kokosovar.free.fr/eyeswideshut/Alice_Bill_Flat.htm http://kokosovar.free.fr/eyeswideshut/Ziegler_party.htm http://kokosovar.free.fr/eyeswideshut/Ziegler_toilets.htm Also don't look if you never saw the movie !!! SPOILERS I will be adding more scenes sporadically when i find the time, thanks for reading guys ⌐■_■, -HP-, Pampers and 2 others 5 Quote
Steppenwolf Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 Ah i remember a discussion i had about this film on mapcore because to me it's visualy stunning but someone else thought it looks like cheap TV movie. It's a bit of a shame you used the cropped version because the film is 4:3 in original and i like that version a lot more. I have the cropped bluray and hate it. If you wonder what makes the visuals so special other then Kubrick's famous framing then it's for sure the lighting. All light sources are in the frame. There arn't many movies who do this. If you watch it without color you will also notice that the frames are illuminated similar to an old black & white noir, which is accentuated in the 4:3 version. KoKo5oVaR and -HP- 2 Quote

I didn't knew there was a 4:3 version, shit, does that mean i'm missing stuff in the frame ? Never noticed that all light sources were in the frame, it's true edit : i took a look and it doesn't seem you miss much informations, however as you said, the shots are much better. Damn. Well that need to be fixed. Quote
Steppenwolf Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 The difference is pretty significant imo. -HP- and ESToomere 2 Quote
KoKo5oVaR Posted June 18, 2014 Author Report Posted June 18, 2014 You are definitely right, especially the fact that it's has been shot to be that way. Just saying that in most it doesn't change what the picture says in terms of informations. But yes well thanks a lot, i need to redo it properly Quote
-HP- Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 Interesting read man, I fucking loved this movie. Quote

That's so funny you mention the light sources thing. I always felt, not even that consciously, that there was a weird honesty to this movie, but that made it that much more mysterious. Perhaps the lighting influenced that perception. Interesting stuff -HP- and ESToomere 2 Quote

Light sources that tipically are too strong and direct, night scenes look like they're being iluminated by one of those portable flood lights with generators (because they are! xD) FMPONE 1 Quote
