but wouldn't it be nice to have a society without the pollution of religion? Think about it.

[...]

So please don't blame the religions, blame the humans that are using their tools in a bad way, i'm atheist btw.

Yes, blame humankind. [...]

Why? Humans are potentially really cool and unique. Religion isn't potentially really cool and definitely not unique. For people who are able to think critically and think for themselves, religion has no added value. I've been in a religious environment pretty long and I have never seen religion improve a person. It may help some people restrain deviant and harmful behavior but then again; independent and critical thinking takes care of that problem too and can take you much farther into your own personal development.

I just don't get the sympathy for religion. It brings close mindedness, violence, rejection, confinement, decline, you name it. Just look at the most religiously led countries and see what blessing religion is for this world. We just don't need it anymore tbh, and especially not something as violent and rigid like Islam.

I definitely don't hate religious people though (my mother is quite Christian) and I respect people regardless of their religion. I just cannot respect religion in itself. It has held the world back for so long ffs.

I don't completely agree. Of course, some people will use things like religion, insanity or perhaps a bad childhood as an excuse for their behavior. But you cannot deny the negative impact religion has on education and when push comes to shove most ''bad'' behavior is caused by lack of knowledge.

Knowledge, man.

Anyhow, sorry for contributing to the derailment of this thread. Not meaning to flame or anything :)

I hate to talk about this shit on mapcore, simply because it's a very polarizing subject and more often than not creates friction among people and rarely a consensus is achieved, but dialog is the way to solve problems, dialog AND open minded research so I guess I'll open this one exception, here's my two cents and my own personal view.

I've been paying a lot more close attention to religion on and off for the past two years, and the more I know, the more I realize religion is the root of too many evils, wrong doings and deaths in the entire human life existence. It's poison to the human intellect, education and society.

Fortunately tho, minimal research will prove that our race is moving on and religious beliefs are slowly dying out, giving way to individual enlightenment, spiritualism and connection with nature, and that's what we need more of, not a organization based and built around death and deception that sole purpose is keeping you in check, controlled and making sure you're part of the sheep.

It kinda makes my blood boil when I see people say: "Those comics shouldn't have disrespected that religion in the first place." That's taking the easy way out, ignoring the underlying problem, we need to have a discussion in regards to the religion problem, including Islam. By not talking about it and use 'respect for their beliefs' as an excuse for not talking about it, you're making it worse and giving in to fear. Since when did any topic become immune to discussion as long as there's the term "it's my beliefs" involved? If it's beliefs, it should not be shielded from criticism or to be talked about, quite the contrary, not talking about it will never stop the violence, but it can make us all slaves to a religion we may not even share (or a religion we actively reject). Politicians dictating their decisions basesdon the christian bible here in the US is another good practical example.

I for one share the philosophy of Charlie Ebdoe's recently murdered editor: 'I would rather die while standing than live on my knees.' of a organized religion that looks up to a invisible friend and lives their life based on a book full of death and rape written more than a thousand years ago in a whole different civilization all together.

But yeah, a lot of people simply don't understand that the way to expose problems is to test them. When we engage in satire and it drives people to KILL, the problem is with the people who want to kill....not the satire! The last thing we should do is cede to the will of Islam (or any religious edict).

HP, as long as you remember that the respect you give others is the respect you give back. It's also quite a blanket statement to say that all religions are horrible - most non-semitic religions are actually pretty ok. I mean, look at Buddhism. Nobody here is comparing extremism of any kind to people who are just of a faith. I'd urge you to read what kokoz said a page back, because it's a pretty important distinction to make between those people who kill for the religion and those who don't. For those who don't; you saying spirituality and them saying religion sounds to me very much like the same statements.

...Which ties into what I wanted to say to KT nicely: People need purpose, they need to know that their existence is meaningful in some way, because that's how the human mind works. Many people have based their purpose on their faith, either by converting or by growing up in a household of practice. This has given them a mental purpose, but it has also intertwined religion into their identity. So when discussing the topic of religion with them, defending their faith becomes paramount for them because it is an essential part of their identity - and breaking their identity is neither something that they want to do nor is it something anyone else can do for/against them. Knowledge in this case will likely just give them cognitive dissonance and make them ignore any rational statements.

Conclusion/TL;DR: My suggestion for a solution is then not to abolish all religion, because people would just make up new stuff to believe, but to let people be and be respectful towards them. Most people use faith in a way that doesn't affect others. Those that do are not really religiously motivated, but politically motivated (e.g. terrorists).

I think it's been atleast 4 years since I posted anything on Mapcore. I've been lurking anonymously from time to time.

Here's a short summary of what I've been doing.

So back in 2010, I decided game development was stupid and there would be no chance of me ever working on games.

I got a boring job as a software engineer in the IT-industry since I thought it would be a low risk well paying career choice.

Worked on +10 different projects in roughly 4 years, became a functioning alcoholic, partied a lot, did a lot of travelling and

was generally having a great time.

Last year I noticed my drinking habit was getting out of hand. Stopped drinking, realized I hated my job.

Saved enough money to quit and start my own company making games.

Finally working full time on a game for the past 2 months. I don't think I've ever been so happy :)

I think this picture is pretty accurate http://www.commitstrip.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Strip-Dileme-de-codeur-550-finalenglsih.jpg

Been continuing to mess around with putting music together. This is still rough as knackers but is about the epitome of what I can manage right now. Still, I can hear endless things that I want to change. I need to do some other shit for a few days so hopefully I'll feel inspired to move this forward a bit more afterwards. It's meant to be atmospheric game BGM type shit for a snowy level.
