Sprony Posted March 24, 2014 Report Posted March 24, 2014 I love British culture. I grew up with British television (The Young Ones, The New Statesman, Are you being Served, Blackadder) and I had a lot of British friends growing up (we had a camping site near where I lived, I always there in summer). When I got older I used to work with a lot of Brits during the summer. I would teach them Dutch and they would teach me English. Which was awesome because I could speak it fluently by the time I was 13. So it's just a real shame I never went to visit England (went once to Southall for day, which doesn't really count). Blasphemy really. I want to correct that by visiting London after this summer (as a start). So why am I posting this here and boring you with my history? Simple, I'm looking for things to do in London. Sure, there are the main tourist attractions but I want the inside information. From the people living and working there. Anything really. Places to visit, things to see, good and cheap hotels, great pubs, tips, tricks, experiences, etc. Just go wild and share you guys. I would appreciate it. Welcome to the CoreAdvisor! Quote

Thrik Posted March 24, 2014 Report Posted March 24, 2014 lol. I don't live in London, but I thoroughly enjoyed my first proper visit there last year. I'm sure that people's mileage will vary, but it is a mega-city and as such it has a monumental amount of stuff to see and do. In all honesty, there's so much that I don't think there are any particular things that stand out. It's more about what kinds of things you like and can cram into your time there. Whether you like nightlife, museums, art galleries, theatre, restaurants, or whatever — you'll find them in ample supply, and better than anywhere else in the country. Of course, one of my favourite parts of going there was just walking around the streets. Going up and down the River Thames on foot was nice, as was exploring the part of the city around Piccadilly Circus and Westminster. Lots of interesting shops, eateries, tourist traps, and Chinatown. If you like photography then the place offers endless opportunities to get some iconic snaps. blackdog and Sprony 2 Quote

marks Posted March 24, 2014 Report Posted March 24, 2014 I just don't really like London, it's very expensive for not much reason, pretentious and just a bit crap really... Quote
dux Posted March 24, 2014 Report Posted March 24, 2014 I managed to spend 2k in 2 days in London. It is that expensive. What? I wanted to DO STUFF there in NICE PLACES. And that's the price you gotta pay! -HP- and Sprony 2 Quote
Thrik Posted March 24, 2014 Report Posted March 24, 2014 Depends what you do, in terms of price. I didn't spend very much at all, but that's because I went to free galleries and museums and spent a lot of time enjoying the outdoor stuff. If you feel like you simply must do the traditional tourist things like ride the London Eye, go to the wax gallery, etc then sure you will spend a lot. That goes for any city though, there are always things they know people are drawn to simply because they're seen as 'the typical thing to do' and as such the price is usually crazy. blackdog and Sprony 2 Quote
Beck Posted March 24, 2014 Report Posted March 24, 2014 I've got a friend who lives down in London and a load of us go down to visit him every so often. I can't say we've done much in the way of sightseeing, it usually ended up with us just drinking and enjoying the nightlife (of which there are some awesome places to go drinking - none of them I can remember the names of haha). I have seen a few of the sights though. Took a boat trip down the Thames once and it's kind of cool to see the landmarks from the river rather than the crowded streets. It started by the London Eye and went down past the Tower of London etc. Was quite a cheap ride too and there's a guy talking about all the sights. Nelson's Column is pretty epic and it has quite a few museums (which are free afaik) nearby, might be a good place to aim for. Also, Buckingham Palace is only down the road from it if that tickles your fancy. I'd definitely recommend getting an oyster card whilst you're in London though, it makes travel so much easier. Basically you get an oyster card and top it up with some cash and then whenever you use a bus or the underground you just swipe it on your way in and swipe it on your way out and it deducts the cost of the trip (There's a maximum fare which is about £4 so you don't have to worry about it costing the world for taking a long trip). It saves a lot of hassle with buying tickets and getting on and off at the rights stations etc. London is a very busy place and if you literally just walk around you're bound to stumble on some event going on. Not the best guide to travel in London (I just follow my mate xD) but I hope it helps a bit Sprony 1 Quote
Warby Posted March 24, 2014 Report Posted March 24, 2014 I have done 3 London trips so far in my life and thoroughly enjoyed all of them ... but I was always hanging out with some locals who knew everything so I recommend you do the same! Sprony 1 Quote

dux Posted March 24, 2014 Report Posted March 24, 2014 One place you absolutely have to 100% go to see is St. Paul's. The fucking ceiling in that place is IMMENSE. Also just because it's hella damn good fun, go to the London Dungeon as well. You won't regret going in there, the actors are great. Sprony 1 Quote

Jord Posted March 24, 2014 Report Posted March 24, 2014 (edited) I just don't really like London, it's very expensive for not much reason, pretentious and just a bit crap really... Agree. Massively overrated, expensive and too busy. Worth a visit if you've never been though, just visit the standard tourist traps so you can say you did. China town, Picadilly Circus and Buckingham Palace are pretty cool places though. Go on trip advisor and just search for the best restaurants as I'd imagine there are some pretty amazing ones.
