Greetings everyone :)

I was directed today by my good friend FMPONE to open an account and post my latest map for CSGO on Mapcore. His words were "it's an awesome community, you'll like it there" :D . I spent a good part of this afternoon reading and educating myself on this community and I was litteraly blown to find out that the "best of the best" hang out in one place :D

It turned out that I also know a good deal of fine folks here: I'm already friends with FMPONE, Volcano, Catfood, Mr. P, RZL and Squad and I know many others from different places such as Steam groups and gamebanana forums. I sure hope to become friends with all of you good and talented folks here :)

I released yesterday my latest map for CSGO - de_brooktown

I hope you enjoy the map :)

Thanks again for having me in this community and I sure hope you accept my humble contribution and addition to an already brilliant community.

Looks cool. A bit flat and yellow lighting though.

Layoutwise... were you inspired by Dust2? ;)

EDIT: I ran around the map. Your Workshop description "The layout is a variation of the standard dust2 figure of 8 layout." is really misleading. A figure of 8 layout is a very general concept. The words you are looking for is "this is a variation of the dust 2 layout". Don't want to sound too harsh but there's just no escaping it. But a reimaging of Dust2 is fine if that was your goal and you perhaps wanted to focus more on the art etc.

Puddy, I never want to mislead anyone and I'm certainly not masking the fact that I based the layout on dust2.

What I wrote is the layout is a variation of the standard dust2 layout which is a figure of 8 layout :)

hope this clear things up and thanks for your concern ;)

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome :)

Welcome to Mapcore, will2k! :)

I agree the lighting is a tad yellowish. The map could benefit with a subtle fog (can't tell for sure if it's there, but if it is then it's not really noticable).

Overall, great work!

I chose this lighting since I wanted this map to be a logical sequel to the events and time frame of my previous map cs_east_borough that took place during mid-day. I wanted brooktown to be in late afternoon between bright mid-day light and soft sunset orange light.

As for fog, since I worked with Volcano on one of my previous maps, he made it clear that fog is a NO-NO :D  for competitive. I came up with a compromise in brooktown by using a very low density fog (0.2 both in map and 3D sky) with a light blue tint to allow light to have some subtle diffuse.

Thanks again and good look for Ali :)

"The layout is a variation of the standard dust2 figure of 8 layout." is alluding to that the only thing this map has in common with dust 2 is that they're based on the same layout style. I think it would be more accurate to say that it is simply an altered version of dust 2 in a new setting.

So I'm not sure what your focus is here. Correct me if I'm wrong but it doesn't seem to display your leveldesign skills. In terms of art, if that's your focus I agree with that the lighting is too yellow.

@ Dejavo: thanks for your comment.

I'll requote a post I made 3 days ago on reddit:

"Dust2 being the most played map and players know its nooks and crannies more than they know their own house, I saw it fit to give everyone a familiar yet different place to wage virtual warfare.

The overall layout is based on dust2's general layout with many differences that you have noticed by now, however, make no mistake that the map was built 100% from scratch over the span of 6 months on and off, starting in August 2013 after releasing cs_east_borough (which Brooktown is its sequel)."

Please refer to my earlier post in reply to Puddy.

@ crepracon: I thought a lot about this issue when designing cs_east_borough (http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=151456229), the prequel to brooktown.

I spent a lot of time researching New York City and decided to go for realism and authenticity. New York power grid is underground so there are no overhead power lines; that's why you don't see power lines across the streets in both cs_east_borough and de_brooktown :)

It seems that you are consistently wording things to try and dodge the unavoidable bullet that this is, in fact, not based on "dust2's general layout". In reality, it is the layout of Dust2. Not "Dust2's general layout". Not a "standard figure of eight layout". Dust2's layout. Period. As an example, Favela is based on Inferno's general layout. It has many significant changes, however, and it stands on it's own.

My question is this; is your focus primarily design/layout or art (as Dejavo brought up)? If your focus is the latter I can't complain. Trying to art an already established layout can be a good way to practice or just have fun if you like arting. As a level design project however, this is a bit thin. The changes to the layout, were they driven by design, testing and feedback or simply by the fact that the environment naturally had to change because of the new setting? For example, it's hard to have double doors and arches in a city.

All in all, I just feel that giving us a city version of dust2 and presenting it as "my map" without clearly stating that it is using dust2's layout in your post is a bit disingenuous and also a bit lazy if this is an actual design project and not an art project. I'd like to hear your thoughts. I could very well be cynical and quick to judge.
