A CS:GO Editing Crash Course [Advice needed]

One thing you could do is find a picture from the internet of a building or a scene - nothing too fancy (an industrual setting for example), and go about replicating that as best you can. Use as many different techniques as possible to do so. Brushes - this will be the main thing you will be using, textures, meshes, overlays, displacements etc.

The reason I say this is because you would probably find it more useful to learn about the technical aspects of the editor than anything else. Layout work will detract from that, even if it is just an fy map. It will also give you something to aim for, which always helps me when learning something.

Keep the remit of what you are looking to produce narrow so that you are near completion after just a few days. If you progress quickly on this, then you could push out some more by adding a 3d skybox, some nice lighting/post process, and maybe even optimise the scene.

By the end, you should have a firm understanding of a lot of what it takes to put a level together.

I don't really know what tutorials are out there, so there could well be a good series that takes you through all this anyway!

Hmm, only piece of advise I could give you aside the tutorials is to start with a small project and try to make it good looking. Furthermore, learn to use the hotkeys and vertex tool as fast as possible, it speeds up your working process immensely!

This.

After watching vivi's stream I realised how badly I needed to learn the hotkeys.

Thank you all for some solid advice, help and suggestions. I'm feeling the love guys. I'm very excited for next week. So if there's anybody else, keep it coming. You know what the real beauty of this thread is? It's not only me that's being helped. Other newcomers will surely find this useful as well!
