Sprony Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 This is a weird thread and I doubt if anything will come from it. Nevertheless, it doesn't hurt to ask so bare with me please. I want to become a better interviewer and that means I need to catch up with current tech and learn a thing or two about design (Quake 3 is a long time ago). Since this is primarily a Source community I decided to go for that engine. Not the most modern engine in the world but Google tells me the transition from Quake 3 to Source is easier. So let's consider this foreplay before moving on to even more modern engines The game to map for will of course be CS:GO. This is a no-brainer. There are tons of tutorials out there and that's not what this thread is about. I already asked for those in this No, next week I have taken 5 days of from work. I cleared my schedule and made a pact with my wife. Those 5 days will not be claimed in anyway and the only thing I'm allowed to do is learn Source. If not, she unleashes hell on earth. The thing I want to ask is if anybody has some good suggestions on how to get the most out of these 5 days? Normally I would just do a bunch of tutorials and go from there but perhaps you guys have better ideas. For instance, start with this particular tutorial series, check out certainexample maps, start with building a layout and go from there, try remaking something first, etc. Just a general overview of you think would be the best approach. If nothing comes from it I'll just do a bunch of tutorials and start mapping TL:DR: What's the most efficient way to learn as much of CS:GO Editing as you can in a week time? Quote
moyyst Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 In one week... umm I learned most of my stuff by demand. If I had an idea but didn't know how to do it, I looked it up. This took a couple of years before I could make something decent (graphics and optimized). I think I would learn how to make optimized buildings before building houses. One tip I can give you. Use the Cut Tool (shift - x) and don't ever use carve. Sprony 1 Quote
Sprony Posted January 22, 2014 Author Report Posted January 22, 2014 Thanks man, for the record, I'm not expecting to master it in a week. I just want to get the most out of it Quote
Vilham Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 Have you ever done any source editing? They are basically the same. If not someone probably knows a good video tutorial to follow. Quote
FMPONE Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 Source is a love/hate engine for most people. I've been working with it for almost like ten years now. Let's call it 8. It's definitely been on and off, but still that's a long time. I would just say try to enjoy it, if you sit there getting angry at yourself for not making better use of five days, you will be miserable. Try to go at it in at least somewhat of a happy, creative mindset, without thinking overly about your available time. Sprony and ⌐■_■ 2 Quote

No, I'm totally new at it. You know nothing Seir. If you need something extra to keep you going it's speed (Amphetamine) you'll need Quote

I expect to run into lots of problems. Just trying to avoid the most common ones Quote
dux Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 Easiest editor in the world. If you've used radiant you'll get to grips with hammer quick enough. It's old and doesn't have the flash of unrealed or cryengine but I'd still pick it over either of those two for its pure brush making joy and sources yummy radiosity that can make any shit look half decent. If you want basic tutorials go on interlopers.net - they're all still relevant for cs:go. Raised on brushes, die on brushes. ⌐■_■, Psy and Sprony 3 Quote
Vilham Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 Yeah interlopers is a great resource for tutorials: http://www.interlopers.net/tutorials/ The error page is amazing for finding any solutions to errors in your compile log. Sprony 1 Quote

'RZL Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 Hmm, only piece of advise I could give you aside the tutorials is to start with a small project and try to make it good looking. Furthermore, learn to use the hotkeys and vertex tool as fast as possible, it speeds up your working process immensely! Nerve and Sprony 2 Quote
