misutow0lf Posted December 17, 2013 Report Posted December 17, 2013 So, I decided to abandon my first layout, as it was utter garbage and I didn't see a way to really repair it. This is my second (read: first!) attempt at a serious CS:GO map. The theme is going to probably be Aztec-ish in appearance, with areas that are sort of like Siege (jungle-y, but more like an...installation/building of non-Aztec nature, maybe? Anyway, there's a bunch of screenshots here, I apologize for there being so many. Overview: Bombsite A: Bombsite B: B Route: Mid: A Route (Warehouse/Hallway): B Tunnel (Lobby, then actual Tunnel) CT Spawn to A: CT Hallway (Choice between A, B (Double-doors), and top of mid (balcony): Mid to A: Mid to B: Anyway...I'm hoping to get this map playtested by the community here on Mapcore. I gathered 9 friends and played a full competitive match on the current iteration of this map, and their feedback was pretty positive for the most part. I will work on packaging the map for a playtest this evening after work, thought I'd throw these up to show you lot as well. Any criticism is welcome. I'm extremely new to the world of level design, and I would rather scrap two maps and learn more that way than work something all the way up to release that is utter garbage because I was unwilling to pick up good habits and learn things about game mechanics and balance.. ken0x Posted December 17, 2013 Report Posted December 17, 2013 I don't know what it is about this map and its pictures but it's making me want to play it. I like the overall look of it and i can't wait to play it and provide feed back! Keep it up. Quote
misutow0lf Posted December 17, 2013 Author Report Posted December 17, 2013 Thanks for the words of encouragement. I am still pondering this map's overall theme but I think Aztec would be neat. I was also considering something like Italy or Inferno. Quote
Nerve Posted December 17, 2013 Report Posted December 17, 2013 How long did this take you to block out? It's looking good. I'm a beginner myself, how long have you been using the SDK? Quote
ken0x Posted December 17, 2013 Report Posted December 17, 2013 Thanks for the words of encouragement. I am still pondering this map's overall theme but I think Aztec would be neat. I was also considering something like Italy or Inferno. I think an italy or inferno feel to it would work, mostly because of how you already have some of the indoor areas looking more like a urban environment, but if you think you can pull off an Aztec feel go for it, it would definitely be something different and if it works out something really cool to play! Good luck! Quote
misutow0lf Posted December 18, 2013 Author Report Posted December 18, 2013 I think I may investigate a more urban feel for it. Either way, I'll be not worrying about theme or any detailing until the layout is 100% solid. Quote
misutow0lf Posted December 18, 2013 Author Report Posted December 18, 2013 @Nerve: It took me a few days to block it out. It also took about a day to sketch. I used Hammer for GoldSource for a year or so, and also used old school WorldCraft for Quake 2, but never made anything of consequence. This is my first serious map that stemmed from a sketched layout, with hopes for full competitive play. Quote

Or just something that came out of your head? haha Quote
misutow0lf Posted December 18, 2013 Author Report Posted December 18, 2013 I really didn't model it after anything I'd seen before. I read this article AFTER I mapped it, though I guess really I sort of did the same thing (to a point) anyway:http://www.worldofleveldesign.com/categories/csgo-tutorials/csgo-how-to-design-gameplay-map-layouts.php Quote
