It's quasi-multiplayer. As I understand it (and to be fair, they have been very vague), players spawn on a randomly selected planet on the outskirts of the universe. The universe is vast and finding another player is apparently very rare. Players, in close proximity, will be placed in a "lobby" of sorts and be able to see eachother etc. Kind of like the seamless multiplayer of Journey if you have played that game. This is in addition to finding other planets and species discovered and named by other players.

It appears, however, that you cannot really "team up" with a friend and fly in formation or what have you. Other players will just be a rare and curious encounter.

possibly intentionally vague because they weren't sure what they could implement in time :P

Share your journey

The galaxy is a living, breathing place. Trade convoys travel between stars, factions vie for territory, pirates hunt the unwary, and the police are ever watching. Every other player lives in the same galaxy, and you can choose to share your discoveries with them on a map that spans known space. Perhaps you will see the results of their actions as well as your own... '

That to me sounds like there's no direct ingame interactions at the moment and it's maybe more a case of any changes made to your game being 'synced' to other players. Having every player in one universe would probably lead to reddit-led attempts for everyone to meet on one planet :P

This game could totally turn out to be space-fable but I'm still down for getting it on launch. If nothing more it'll be an awesome £40 wallpaper generator :)

Yeah I thought to understand what @Puddy explained... but wasn't thinking it was that sparse/serendipitous encounter.

Anyway I find this game fascinating, great art considering it's procedural and this vast... but it's the kind of time-sinker I can't buy into. Apart from the fact that I tend to like more action-themed games, I really can't justify exploring an infinite virtual universe.

Ah man, why is this game coming out now with Deus Ex: Mankind Divided just a few weeks ago and me still getting through Uncharted 4? :(

There are some aspects of it that I'm unsure about such as the multiplayer being less extensive than I thought and I also worry that the depth of the gameplay and therefore appeal will be quite limited once the initial wow factor wears off. Still, it seems so ambitious and masterfully put together that it'll probably end up being one of those 'must experience it at least once if you consider yourself passionate about the art of gaming' kinds of games such as Journey.

Only really saw anything about this game a few months ago, seems I must have been hiding under a rock or something because i was surprised at how famous the game is supposed to be.

But to me just the relaxing, casual exploration seems enjoyable for me. The multiplayer aspect they talk about just seems like they backtracked on the idea of multiplayer, but need to add something to appease those that will hold them to the promise. As they say themselves, considering there is so many billions of planets, the chances of players even being close to each other is close to zero. So I don't even see the point of the lobby system that @Puddy mentioned they have added.

Personally I'm just looking forward to the relaxing atmosphere of exploring the planets and seeing all the animals that are named after penises by other players. But the procedural generation makes me worried that every location will look nice on a grand scale, but have no soul. And once you have named a planet "Planet McPlanetface" there is no reason to stick around or care. If the reviews are decent, i'll probably pick it up shortly after launch.

I've watched some leaked streams the other day and tbh the game looks incredibly boring and grindy to me. All i've seen people do is nonstop collect ressources and scan some animals for cash. I've read there is life on every single planet. I don't know what the fun is in this. Feels so shallow if thers instant "reward" for exploration around every corner.

I would prefer a game that's mostly empty but where there are some meaningful things to discover if you put the effort in and take risks going deep into hostile territory with no save spots or whatever.

I've been so hyped for this game and recently I have started to dial back my expectations. Our imagination can run away sometimes when the game makers are a bit vague and not much footage has been released. In an earlier interview Sean Murray, aka No Man's Sky's programming guru, said that for every 1 planet with life there would be 9 lifeless/barren ones or something like that. Seems like they backpedaled on that. I agree with you that the discovery can feel a bit empty if they are too generous with that sort of stuff.

Anyway, we'll see, I still can't wait to play it and I still think it will be a fun game. Maybe 7/10 fun and not 10/10 fun, but still fun!

That does seem a bit lame if true. I expected most planets to be lifeless and maybe only worth mining a bit of ore or something. And on the rare occasion you come across one with life it would be all that more special to find animals or plants. I also expected some planets might have had different levels of life, some with mostly ocean life and very little on land, others with lots of smaller life forms that seem like they are early in evolution and of course planets with much more developed life and huge animals. If there is life on every planet then every planet is just more of the same.

I've avoided all the youtube and live streams though so hopefully the universe is more barren and not a grindfest. But wouldn't surprise me if it is since I don't think I have played a single good game that has procedural generation. They all seem to focus on the crafting and repetitious activities to mask over the bland gameplay.
