Sprony Posted November 24, 2013 Report Posted November 24, 2013 Not the most recent news but apparently Quake Live will be a free standalone game. You can read the announcement here. Will there be Mac/Linux support? We will be unable to support Mac and Linux clients with this transition. While we have reports from our testers that the game works through emulation or virtualization software, we are unable to support native Mac and Linux versions. If you’re using Mac and Linux and have a paid subscription, you will only be able to access the game using emulation or virtualization software. This part baffles me. You would think that the guys who invented it would know that competitive gamers will never accept running an online game through emulation while the competition can run on a native client. Besides that, seeing Id's history with Linux/Mac support and Valve's upcoming SteamOS, not too mention it's that the engine is known to run well on Linux/Mac, really makes me wonder what's the reasoning behind this. Quake Live never made Id any money so that shouldn't be it. It's not a smart move for an already small community. Too bad! Quote
Pampers Posted November 24, 2013 Report Posted November 24, 2013 You would also know that competitive gamers would never use mac or linux Sprony, -HP- and marks 3 Quote
blackdog Posted November 24, 2013 Report Posted November 24, 2013 I think the most baffling thing about the lack of support, is that Q3 was already running on those platforms years ago.How much code did they rewrite? Quote
Skjalg Posted November 25, 2013 Report Posted November 25, 2013 Maybe the guy who wrote the code left the company and his code is so unreadable that the other programmers have to rewrite everything? marks, AlexM and Sentura 3 Quote
AlexM Posted November 25, 2013 Report Posted November 25, 2013 Maybe it technically does run but they dont want to officially support it. It sounds really weird that they would port a multi-plat/OGL game to windows/directx Quote
DrywallDreams Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 Odd timing on the lack of support. Linux gaming is growing a lot right now. Funny how this happens right when John Carmack is leaving though. Quote
Sprony Posted January 11, 2014 Author Report Posted January 11, 2014 So when is this out exactly? Now! http://www.quakelive.com/#!welcome Quote

Rick_D Posted January 11, 2014 Report Posted January 11, 2014 so, quake 3 was a standalone game, then ti went to a web browser, now it;s a standalone game with a web browser inside it. i can't fathom the fucking logic. still, it's as fun as it ever was. Sprony and AlexM 2 Quote
Sprony Posted August 29, 2014 Author Report Posted August 29, 2014 So new update in preparation for Steam that basically ruins the game. The little trust that was left in Id Software is now completely gone. Source Most important bit: Players may now hold forward and jump to 'bunny hop', allowing them to slowly gain up to 2x their base movement speed. Introduced Loadouts in select modes; allowing players to select one Primary Weapon (hmg, rl, lg, rg) and one Secondary Weapon (sg, gl, pg, mg). Added in-world item timers for "major" items, including armors, megahealth, power-ups, and medkit. Quote
Evert Posted August 29, 2014 Report Posted August 29, 2014 (edited) I'm veeery sceptical about these changes but anyways: Players may now hold forward and jump to 'bunny hop', allowing them to slowly gain up to 2x their base movement speed. Added in-world item timers for "major" items, including armors, megahealth, power-ups, and medkit. These two could work though, especially the timers since so many people have access to these external timers anyways. The bunnyhopping one could maybe MAYBE work. Everyone that plays the game even in low tiers already do it to some extent anyways so making it easier for new players could work. I just hope that they don't simply remove bunnyhopping and replace it with this, then it's crap (like I hope that the 2x isn't a clamped move speed but rather a clambed babby jump-mode). The load outs is just shit though, that should've just been added as a server option and not be a default setting. Edit: Heavy speculations here: This entire change really sounds like they're preparing a "modernized" console launch. Load out = side arm/main gun like every other FPS on console Hold jump" = essentially a sprint button Are they testing out different options for how to treat a multiplat Doom4 MP? Sjonsson Posted August 29, 2014 Report Posted August 29, 2014 I'm gonna try it, but I really don't think I will like the new bunnyhopping. Fuck that! I want it to be a challenge! Quote
dux Posted August 29, 2014 Report Posted August 29, 2014 Awesome. can't wait until they add ironsights too! Sjonsson and 2d-chris 2 Quote
