Taylor Posted December 7, 2013 Author Report Posted December 7, 2013 (edited) Only the bullets hurt you so you should be able to move through the fireworks going up. The collision detection is wonky though! I don't sweep test anything, so it only checks collision for the frames that get rendered. If you have a low frame rate or things are moving too fast you can potentially step-over a bullet. This is not ideal but saved time in the jam. Edited December 7, 2013 by Taylor Quote
Sentura Posted December 7, 2013 Report Posted December 7, 2013 Err, everyone I hope. There’s some really good stuff being made in Unity. I will not disagree that good stuff is made in Unity, but man some things in Unity really is a pain in the ass and are really ugly, like their terrain in example. I've seen loads of awesome Unity terrains. I love this: http://www.paladinstudios.com/2013/07/05/building-levels-in-unity-part-1-of-3/ Great work Taylor It looks like pretty much all other Unity terrain? I don't disagree that you can put a lot of style onto a terrain (especially when you modify the shader), but for the most part it feels like putting shotgun makeup on an ugly face. Quote
Taylor Posted December 7, 2013 Author Report Posted December 7, 2013 I think there are a lot of terrain extensions in the store. I only make stuff out of cubes and sprites myself. The building blocks of true art. Sentura 1 Quote
Taylor Posted December 16, 2013 Author Report Posted December 16, 2013 First Hour Superpower The theme for this months Ludum Dare was You Only Get One. I was hoping Death Is Useful would win, because I wanted to make a Zelda-style game where Death followed you around like an over-excited Na'vi shouting "hey listen" and offering up the solutions to puzzles even faster than Naughty Dog. However, instead we have this. Your character is capable of four 'powers' such as double jumping and becoming insoluble, however after the introduction you can only carry one of these with you. If you want to see all the rooms you'll need to play with all the powers. I made it in Unity (plus Photoshop, sfxr, and Abundant) but there is no Web Player version because of how I did my level structure.Jam PageThis year I have made seven games. Eight if you include the one where I was employed for money and stuff. Sentura 1 Quote
Skjalg Posted December 16, 2013 Report Posted December 16, 2013 Blizzard uses unity for hearthstone. that's good enough incentive for me Quote

Thrik Posted December 16, 2013 Report Posted December 16, 2013 Haha, that one is really cool. I love the range of movement tricks, not to mention the vibe of the art — reminds me of Dizzy for some reason. Are those enemies meant to be evil mugs? Taylor 1 Quote
Taylor Posted December 16, 2013 Author Report Posted December 16, 2013 (edited) Yeah, there is a lot of Monty on the Run inspiration and I remembered one of the enemies in that is just a mug with an evil face on it. Amused me so I did the same... although they kind of look like cameras too. Game art is not my forte, unfortunately. Edited December 16, 2013 by Taylor Quote
Sentura Posted December 16, 2013 Report Posted December 16, 2013 (edited) I'm a huge fan of your design decisions, even more so in the scope of the Ludum Dare. Good stuff! Edited December 16, 2013 by Sentura Taylor and AlexM 2 Quote
Taylor Posted January 13, 2014 Author Report Posted January 13, 2014 I deleted my site at the start of 2014 so it was just a portfolio and not some weird portfolio + blog hybrid that was never updated or visited, but I forgot I was using the wordpress images so I've kind of nuked half this page. Oops. But it does mean all my tat is now arranged nicely at: http://alexandertaylor.net. Also, I've made a new game: Last Word Reactions are mixed! I will do a video walkthrough in a bit and annotate it with explanations, but basically I've not really done a puzzle-focused game before, people are tripping up a lot, and it's probably my fault... Web Player | Game Jam Page Also, First Hour Superpower did so badly in LD28 it didn't even place, so that's fun! Apparently you need to hit a minimum vote threshold and I didn't. This is mostly my own fault for not voting enough. Speaking of failure here's how MetritronHF did last year. I'm thinking maybe I should move this thread over to Games Discussion if I'm going to keep prattling on. Is that vain? I mean they are, ostensibly, games. idk! Play Last Word! Quote
Sjonsson Posted January 13, 2014 Report Posted January 13, 2014 Hey Taylor! I played it through, lit up the shrines and figured the temple room had a combination on the wall but that was about it, I wanted to see the end but oh well. Anyway, I enjoyed the game, the best part was talking with fellow other creatures whatever they are. As soon as I god the word of religion I thought I were to convert them or something, sadly they all just turned angry. The whole thing with making the environment friendly by expressing love was very cute and an interesting concept. Lastly, did you do the track cause it was quite catchy! I played it long enough to have it stuck in my head for the rest of the day, haha. (Yeah that happens too often.) Taylor 1 Quote
Taylor Posted January 13, 2014 Author Report Posted January 13, 2014 Thanks! A lot of people get to the temple and think it's a lot more complicated than it actually is. Some of the solutions people are trying I wish I had thought of! I've put together a playthrough video and it's annotated with the answers to things. Obviously this also spoilers the puzzle side completely. Music is not mine, it's by a guy named Spiff Tune who had dropped it on /r/gameassets. ⌐■_■, Sjonsson, Mazy and 3 others 6 Quote

General Vivi Posted January 24, 2014 Report Posted January 24, 2014 Feels like you should release it as a small game. Taylor 1 Quote
