KungFuSquirrel Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 So I'm working my way up the lines of modeling, with eventual goals to do some high poly work. In the meantime, I'm starting a series of low-poly skyscraper models as a chance to practice my basic techniques. Eventually I'll bump these up to high poly as well, but for now it's very simple stuff. First was the Bank of China tower in Hong Kong. It's a really simple shape and should be excellent exercise for both modeling and UV work. Model is 68 polygons, 135 tris. Built in Lightwave 7.5. The building: The model: Quote
Spellbinder Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 It looks similaire to the real deal. Profile wise. Would love to see it with some texture on it. 10 points for effort! Spellbinder. Quote
OL Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 thats really all the detail you need for say a 3d skybox model. The only thing i can see is that at the very bottom you can weld one of the lines out to save 8 polys (it doesnt LOOK like its adding any detail, but it might be) like this: Quote
DanielAragon Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 sorry if this is a newb question, but is saving a mere 8 polygons taht importans, or not? Quote
Algor Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 In the long run, every polygon matters. Quote
ReNo Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 I don't think you will be using more than 1 Bank Of China building in any given scene though I guess if you were to be using something this low poly at all however, then 8 polys might be worth saving at the expense of such a tiny detail loss. I really need to get around to doing some modelling at some point. I once made a crappy knife, but it was hardly something worth posting Quote
KungFuSquirrel Posted January 10, 2005 Author Report Posted January 10, 2005 Remember, this is all practice. I'm starting off low poly so I can get a solid base set of skills and build from there while making sure I'm doing it right. Next up is Empire State and Chrysler, and then another set with the Sears Tower, TransAmerica Pyramid, and Library Tower (which, even at low poly, will probably be the most difficult to construct). OL: there is a slight indent on the bottom. Had to kinda guess, though, didn't find any good pictures of the base of the tower. Quote
Schmung Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 Saving polys is always, always worth it. If not just for the minor performance increase you get if there's gonna be many instances of the object, then you should always optimise the crap out of things purely from a good practice point of view. If you optimise everything then it becomes habit and it's one less thing you have to worry about. Quote
von*ferret Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 modeleres should optimize for the level designers can have bad habbits. Right? Who's with me? Quote
RD Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 the mappers dont visit the model forum ferret Quote
mike-0 Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 I do. Look, im in the model forum kkekeke! Quote
PS_Mouse Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 Remember, this is all practice. I'm starting off low poly so I can get a solid base set of skills and build from there while making sure I'm doing it right. That strikes me as rather smart way to go about it. Quote
von*ferret Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 you ever going to show us more? Quote
