Okay so I did some massive research on this matter a while back.

First, never buy "pc-speakers". They are usually a bad investment (both expensive AND subpar audio quality). Now, with those off the table you can select two approaches: regular hi-fi speakers or studio monitors. Hi-fi speakers are designed to provide "oomphy", enhanced sound while studio monitors are designed to give you accurate, neutral sound without modification.

As I tend to listen a lot to music I chose the studio monitor approach as I want to listen to my music as-is without "enhanced" sound. I bought a pair of Yamaha HS50M's but I was also considering some sort of Genelec speaker. These brands are the ones I recommend. So far I have managed without a woofer but I am considering getting one now. Bands like Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy and The Kills sound fantastic even without a woofer as you get crisp, clean audio and the tracks generally don't have a lot of bass, so you're not missing anything really (by bass I don't mean bass guitar). But modern electro and stuff like that kind of requirrs a woofer to be enjoyed fully.

Without woofers the speakers are quite cheap, around 250 quid if I had to guess. But the woofer is an additional 450 or so. I can go into more detail if desired. :)

Some solid advice there, thank you! :-D The ones you went with have terrific reviews so I shall put them at the top of my list when it comes to next payday, lol. I agree that I'd rather have a neutral speaker, as I can always use my sound card's equaliser if I want to deviate from that. I'll probably skip the woofer and see how I roll with just speakers initially.

blackdog, the place isn't that big lmao. It just happens to have a really cool position in the building so lots of light and balcony space. Here's a really lazy panorama for who asked:

I see. As the others said already, very nice apt., supercool position :)

Don't you get annoying glare on the TV btw?

Yeah it's a bitch. I'm getting blackout curtains but they're quite pricey for so much window and I need them for the bedroom too so living with the glare for a while.

See that hole in the corner of the room covered by a blue plastic computer case panel? Thats where my wild squirrel pets used to live until I got an exterminator to plug the hole with some expanding foam.
