mjens Posted May 8, 2013 Report Posted May 8, 2013 Hi Mapcorians, anyone here is registered on Names in Games? What's that actually, hm? Quote
blackdog Posted May 8, 2013 Report Posted May 8, 2013 "Gird your loins" "Bods and counting"... doesn't seem very serious platform the design of the site itself doesn't help, seems thrown together in a couple of afternoons. Quote
Chimeray Posted May 8, 2013 Report Posted May 8, 2013 (edited) Yeah, they should be as professional/serious as we are, right? God forbid if they have a cats thread. OT, haven't heard of it, probably not gonna join since it's not related to any specific work like mapcore, polycount is... (And does look kinda shitty indeed, but looks can be deceiving) Edited May 8, 2013 by Chimeray Quote
Jord Posted May 8, 2013 Report Posted May 8, 2013 I joined like 2 years ago when it first launched and had no one on it. It seemed pretty pointless and still does, haven't used it since. As far as 'professional' networks go I only use LinkedIn. Quote

If your site doesn't have a cats thread/space, it's not a valuable community I dunno, maybe i misunderstood the aim of the portal, but looks to me it would like to be a Linkedin for the Game Industry, and i don't see how it could compete, if the premises are those. Thrik Posted May 8, 2013 Report Posted May 8, 2013 Just seems kind of redundant when LinkedIn offers virtually the same service but is a lot better and has infinitely more people already on it. As has been said many times (particularly about Google+): the best social network is the one people you know are actually using. I vaguely recall another site trying to do exactly the same thing some years ago, which predictably I've never come across again. Quote

I think it was supposed to be a tighter community site for games industry specifically but it ended up being just another place for recruiters to add every single person in the industry. I joined one years ago which seemed cool for a little while called Playfire which allowed you to add a list of games you owned, rate them and give them reviews. It gave you a score based on how many ratings, reviews etc you'd given for games. Like a trip advisor for games I guess. https://www.playfire.com/ The only social networks I use are Facebook and LinkedIn. I'd love Google+ to be huge but it won't happen while Facebook exists. Quote
Puddy Posted May 9, 2013 Report Posted May 9, 2013 Man, this new 'Names in Games' site is the shit! It's just what I needed! Said no one ever. Quote

That's understandable, we (as people) want to have a feeling of membership. But it's also a limitation, i mean... the Game Industry is employing people with different backgrounds (web designers, economists etc) so it's "contradictory" to migrate on a lonely island (if the objective is just to reduce the noise and you don't have peculiar features for the social group you are aiming at). I joined one years ago which seemed cool for a little while called Playfire I think it came out from the people who developed Xfire, i remember receiving a couple of newsletters to join. It's a nice concept, but in the end I'm personally not interested... i mean, in the end I choose the games I want to buy without much influence from other people, and I find the couple of forum and articles I read when in doubt have served me well. I'd prefear -and still have the project in a drawer- to have a space in my personal website, if I just want to share my thoughts on a game/movie/book. Em' 1 Quote
