-HP- Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 In the meantime there's the Dark Mod, now standalone if you need your oldschool and faithful Thief fix. Man I love stealth, but I think that's one step too far. I find that boring as hell. Quote
Sentura Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 wow the FOV in that trailer is hella weird Quote
dux Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 wow the FOV in that trailer is hella weird It's called 90 vertical FOV knj 1 Quote
Steppenwolf Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 (edited) fov mimimi. boring mimimi. God damn console kids. On a serious note. It was always what made Thief Thief that most direct encounters with enemies would end with ones dead. If it end up like Dishonored where you can basicly play it as fps then it's not Thief anymore imo. Edited October 11, 2013 by Steppenwolf KoKo5oVaR and Sentura 2 Quote
Sentura Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 I actually thought it was a bit too much with the FOV, which is why I mentioned it. It kind of removes something from the experience when your eyes are basically the same as a chameleon's. Quote
Skacky Posted October 11, 2013 Author Report Posted October 11, 2013 Man I love stealth, but I think that's one step too far. I find that boring as hell. Well that is stealth how it should be done. TDM is one of the best mods ever made because while it is very faithful to Thief in every aspect, it actually improves on it by making it much more complex and much harder. You'll need a lot more patience and planning if you want to KO a single guard, for instance, compared to the original games. Running behind them to club them just doesn't work anymore because the guards have heightened senses and can definitely hear you running. Quote
Steppenwolf Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 (edited) I saw this on neogaf. I haven't really payed too much attention to the new Thief game yet but was looking forward to it being a huge fan of the old games, especially 1+2. But reading this really kills all interest that i have for the game. Also saw this interview posted which makes the guys sound completely detached from what made the franchise great: http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/10/10/thief-interview/ We’ve seen players who don’t even bother to read anything they find. We have to make sure the game is fun for them, too. So, it’s a big challenge to add enough layers of exposition to not penalize anyone who wants to skip over that kind of stuff. This quote pretty much sums up what's wrong with not just with Thief but big games as a whole these days. What i wonder is, is it really what players want? Or did the gaming industry actualy condition players to play this way? It all started around COD 2 didn't it? I can't imagine that players these days are just born so differently then the generation before. Edited October 11, 2013 by Steppenwolf dux 1 Quote
Skacky Posted October 11, 2013 Author Report Posted October 11, 2013 Yeah, this is really old news. Most of the die-hard fans hate this game's guts. Quote

Well, those die-hard fans are the minority and a lot of the times the ones that pirate the games that you make. That's the painful truth and why we don't have nice things anymore Quote

Skacky Posted October 11, 2013 Author Report Posted October 11, 2013 (edited) And this is where you're wrong, Helder, sorry to say it. The die-hard fans are not a minority, especially when you read comments on gaming websites. Just read comments on RPS, PCGamer or Polygon and you'll see what I mean, or watch any official youtube video posted. Edited October 11, 2013 by Skacky Quote
-HP- Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 Ok, fine it was a generalization but here's what I really meant. I'm a avid fan of RPS for years, and I'm well aware of the hardcore gamers and fans in there and other communities, (I'm one of them for fuck sakes!) they're just like we are, they enjoy playing and DO buy good games like thief, SS2, deus ex, starcraft and other master pieces. What I'm trying to say is, as much as these guys do represent a slice of the cake, they're still a minority compared to the "average" gamer and consumer, and it's impossible for publishers and AAA studios alike to ignore that fact and not to try and target their product to them as well. This is where this compromise comes in, trying to appeal to two completely different audiences. I'm extremely proud that the company I work for didn't sell out on that and that we still target at the die-hard fans, committed to make high quality products, and games that we ourselves would buy, and still manage to do well! So, yes, it's possible to do it if you respect and know your audience, I'm just saying the majority of the publishers don't do this, Square Enix is not doing this they are trying to aim at both hardcore and casual gamers alike, just like they did with DX:HR. Whether that's a good decision or not, it's highly debatable, I agree but they're doing it because of $$$$ it all boils down to that in the end for many publishers unfortunately. You either go broad or go focused, trying to find a middle ground is insanely challenging. I believe DX:HR sorta did it, it was a fantastic game and both your average joe and avid fans alike did enjoy it. But that's very rare, guess we'll see about Thief 4. KoKo5oVaR 1 Quote
Steppenwolf Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 Well what i wonder is if the "casual player" actualy existed before todays generation or wheter it's a monster that the game industry has created themselfes. On reflection as i said i think this whole casual craze really took off with COD 2. The first one was already pretty succesful on PC. Then COD 2 came out with the 360. The game was suddenly on console and sold a lot. With it also the Hollywoodification and dumbing down of the franchise began. I think publishers just looked at this success and from then on everybody had this idea in their heads that out there live millions of "casual players" who love "streamlined" and over the top games and nothing else. But this to me seems sorta like a broken window fallacy. Games were popular before that and ppl played fucking hard games on consoles. It's plausible that games would sell just as well today if developers had stuck with more challenging and sophisticated games. And to me it seems also plausible that the dumbed down games created the players who can't cope with challenging and sophisticated games anymore in the first place. -HP- 1 Quote
Taylor Posted October 12, 2013 Report Posted October 12, 2013 I recall the recent Splinter Cell said it would support both stealth and a shooter approach because blah blah modern audiences. How did that turn out? Quote
FMPONE Posted October 12, 2013 Report Posted October 12, 2013 I don't think fans of thief are really going to be a market force, frankly. This is probably about trying to open up the IP some, and as we all know that can get messy. I think the game looks quite polished from the trailers, the only problem is that it's a bit obvious and generic in its approach. Polish is nice though, it goes a long way. -HP- 1 Quote
