Goemon Posted December 24, 2012 Report Posted December 24, 2012 Hi, I'm looking to be pointed in the right direction towards becoming a professional level designer. I'm basically new to the subject and am interested in both level design and environment art. I don't have an artistic background, but I am looking for the best place to start. Any suggestions/ideas would be appreciated. I've actually taken a college course, but I didn't get much out of it... I also plan on using the UDK as I've seen it widely used on some of my favorite games like Batman: Arkham Asylum and Bioshock. Thanks in advanced! Quote
FMPONE Posted December 24, 2012 Report Posted December 24, 2012 (edited) Step 1: learn to map Step 2: make a map Step 3: let people know about your map Rinse and repeat several times Step 4: make a portfolio Step 5: apply for jobs Good luck. Edit: A great rescource is Hourences, and his book. http://www.hourences.com/the-hows-and-whys-of-level-design-about/ Edited December 24, 2012 by FMPONE Psy and ⌐■_■ 2 Quote
razormax Posted December 24, 2012 Report Posted December 24, 2012 Besides what FMPONE said, play lots of game from different genres and try to understand the gameplay and how the levels are made. Research is the key. Also it would be better to choose either Level Designer or Environment Artist when you start. Doing both at the start will only increase your confusion. I recommend you take a look at www.worldofleveldesign.com. Also take a look at beginning level design book. Its is good for beginners. You can also start meddling with UDK just to get a hang of it.
