As I'm developing a CSGO map, don't like waiting for playtests and see a couple of other people developing maps here, I thought: Should I buy a cheap CSGO server for Mapcore?

It probably wouldn't see that much use but it would be nice to have some more regular playtest sessions and just a place where we can play every week or so. :P

Thoughts?

i have a stateside server (chicago). it's central to the group of people i play with, but not so much for mapcore, i know.

still, i play with quite a few people that love custom content (or did in the source days), and i'm happy to host any beta maps that come through here, in addition to whatever you guys do with a euro server.

what happened with the donations idea? how is the hosting on this site currently funded? by thrik alone? :(

We did one donation drive roughly a year ago which was designed to fund the site for a year, which thus far has gone into the new software and hosting costs (and is more or less depleted at this point). Prior to that it just came out my pocket. ;) This seemed to work really well rather than just having a permanent donation button up and the donations received have been invaluable.

It is getting towards being time for another donation drive around the beginning of 2013, as while I've never resented forking out for MapCore it obviously takes the pressure off significantly and makes it easier to justify investing my time and money — hence all the changes this year! Whether or not there'd be spare for a game server too I don't know, but if anyone wants to donate in the form of a server that's also awesome and I'll be happy to ensure it's advertised well. :)

Seems there's a lot of interest in CS:GO and mapping or it right now, so it'd be a sensible choice for playtesting alone.

You should go for it. I would donate money. On the other hand, depending on the cost, I would be willing to finance a Mapcore CS GO server but I have no interest in maintaining it or playing admin. I would of course, play games on it :)

Let me know!

Then put the donation up again now man! I'm sure there's plenty of people that want to donate (like last year). No need to wait for 2013!

Idea: Every time funds are depleted just put a banner on top of mapcore, simple as that. I'm sure there'd be money in no time! :)
