Izuno Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2 ... for-USD299 Nintendo has announced at an event in New York today that the Wii U will launch in the US on Sunday, November 18, with European consumers having to wait until Friday, November 30. The basic set will be sold for $299 in the US, while a deluxe configuration will be sold for $349. The Basic SKU will offer a white, 8GB Wii U console, a GamePad, AC adapters, a sensor bar, and an HDMI Cable, while the Deluxe SKU has everything that Basic has but it's in a black color and it bumps up the memory to 32GB. It also comes with charging cradles and a copy of Nintendoland. Moreover, to push digital, Nintendo is including a Deluxe Digital Promotion in the higher-end SKU. This will earn gamers some rebates for downloadable Wii U titles in the eShop as they make purchases. And more details and such... Obviously the Nov 18 US date is to make sure it is available before Black Friday over here (i.e., the day after Thanksgiving for people outside the US who don't already know) so not a huge surprise. I think I heard Japan release is in Dec. Personally, I am undecided on whether I go for it. I have a 3 yr old now and she's a little young for games still and I might just dust off the old Wii when the time is right, but I admit somehow I am a bit intrigued. That said, $299 is the most expensive Nintendo console launch ever (right?). Having played with it at E3, I would love some super meaty RPG or open world action game (Borderlands 2???) with that tablet controller for an always on map or inventory screen or...something... Or shit I'll just go back to playing more PC games... Quote
Mazy Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 Hmm still haven't seen anything that could convince me into getting one. It's kind of an issue when a Nintendo console's most interesting titles are from 3rd party, none of what Nintendo has shown so far has really impressed or shown off the hardware in the best light. And really, Smartglass and the next Xbox will basically blow this out of the water from the looks of it. Nintendo really needs to step it up and show some genuinely awesome games that utilise the controller. But all it takes is a Super Mario Galaxy 3, then I'll probably get one just to play that Quote
Serenius Posted September 14, 2012 Report Posted September 14, 2012 Pretty sure the Wii was $299 when it was first released. Quote
Izuno Posted September 14, 2012 Author Report Posted September 14, 2012 Pretty sure the Wii was $299 when it was first released. According to all knowing wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_launch But whatever it's only a $50 difference. However, the Gamecube launched at about $199, so that made the Wii "the most expensive Nintendo console since the Gamecube" or something...and now the WiiU is same nominal amount higher. So in other words, your sentiment is correct in that it isn't necessarily the hugest deal. Quote
Serenius Posted September 14, 2012 Report Posted September 14, 2012 Now that I think about it, I think the pack I bought was $299 because it had 2 Wiimotes, a charger stand, and some other stuff thrown in. Quote
Warby Posted September 14, 2012 Report Posted September 14, 2012 a 100$ price drop and a metroid and or zelda game would sell me that thing. Quote
FrieChamp Posted September 14, 2012 Report Posted September 14, 2012 On the topic of costs (disclaimer: didn't verify this myself): http://i.imgur.com/ZwxWq.png Why I believe the Wii U is going to fail or only achieve "moderate success": they are re-entering the red ocean that they had left during the Wii era, while bringing not enough new or better to the already crowded space. The TVii is a complete reverse on their cheap anti-home-entertainment-strategy for the Wii. Why is Nintendo doing this? After disrupting the market, maybe they think they can convert their Wii customer base into (mid-)core gamers and that's why they stick with the "Wii" branding. But I fear that the casual audience has moved on and rather plays on their mobile phones or tablets. And the hardcore gamers? Give me one reason why a hardcore gamer who already owns an XBOX360 or PS3 should leave their gaming communites behind and buy a Wii U. I would love some super meaty RPG or open world action game (Borderlands 2???) with that tablet controller for an always on map or inventory screen or...something... "Or something" is precisely the problem. Maybe some developer will come up with a genius idea to use that controller in a unique way. Right now it seems the Wii U versions don't bring enough new to the table in comparison to their 360/PS3 counterparts. And are you sure you want to keep switching between TV and the screen on the gamepad to look up your position on the map or access your inventory all the time? Getting rid of the split-screen in 2 player sessions is the biggest benefit I can see right now and that enables some interesting concepts for multiplayer games. But I don't see myself buying a Wii U anytime soon. Quote

Taylor Posted September 14, 2012 Report Posted September 14, 2012 Nintendo don’t sell consoles at a loss like Sony and Microsoft. Third party generally doesn't do very well on a Nintendo consoles. Smart Glass probably won't get any dedicated games but is much better tech. I don’t want to play Bayonetta 2 on brick. Thoughts. Quote
Thrik Posted November 19, 2012 Report Posted November 19, 2012 So hey, this is out. Someone somehow got into the Miiverse 'debug mode' which amongst other things includes a list of each region's admins, buttons for deleting them (that don't work), plus a bunch of private forums: http://www.neogaf.co...ad.php?t=500411 The one that caught my eye was 'Metal Gear Solid'. What's this? The only sensible things I can think of are either a port of the recent HD re-releases of MGS2 and MGS3 (meh), or a fucking HD re-release of the GameCubes' Twin Snakes. Yes please. Quote
