Sprony Posted June 21, 2012 Report Posted June 21, 2012 Yesterday, when I was checking the latest news on Gamer.nl, I spotted a nice article about the possible return of Wolfenstein. Since most of you are not Dutch, here’s a rough translation: In april the news came out that Human Head Studios had problems with Zenimax, the parent company of publisher Bethesda. They stopped working on Prey 2 to demand a better deal. It was not clear if Prey 2 would be taken over by a different studio working for Bethesda. All of their studios, except for one, are busy. Id Software is working on Rage/Doom, Bethesda Softworks are probably working on Fallout 4 [not confirmed], Tango Studios is working on Project Zwei, Arkane is busy with Dishonored and Splash Damage is working on two different free-to-play titles and a iOS game. There’s only one Bethesda studio left, Machinegames from Sweden. Zenimax bought the company in 2010. The press release stated that the company was formed out of the original founders of Starbreeze [Escape from Butcher Bay, The Darkness] and that it’s working on a multiplatform title for Bethesda. It’s also stated that they are using the new Id-tech 5 technology. Which means they are working on something for 2,5 years now. So what are they working on? Just before the E3 the news came out that the rights to Wolfenstein.com are being transferred from Activision to Zenimax. Timing was perfect. Because of the E3, almost nobody picked this up. A month ago, in honor of its 20th year anniversary, Bethesda released a special version of Wolfenstein 3D which is playable in browsers. A great way to see if there’s still interest. Because the last Wolfenstein game was not well received. So you got a new studio, that has experience with first person shooters, working with Id-Tech 5 on a unannounced game for a publisher who’s just putting some spotlight back on a legendary franchise. You do the math. Quote
mjens Posted June 21, 2012 Report Posted June 21, 2012 W2 was boring but still I've enjoyed it. The graphics were very poor because of the engine (lots of brushworking instead of using meshes). The main problem is that I don't remember any action from this game... Another Wolfenstein should be reworked from foundament... Quote
-HP- Posted June 21, 2012 Report Posted June 21, 2012 Great game design ideas on the last Wolfenstein, that green alternate reality was pretty good. Even the art was nice, but there was something off about the game, It could have been the old engine, weird level design or just plain simply released at bad timming. I remember fondly Return to Castle Wolfenstein tho, definitely one of the best FPS games I ever played, up there with NOLF and DeusEx. Quote
Thrik Posted June 21, 2012 Report Posted June 21, 2012 Only one I've played is Return to Castle Wolfenstein, but it seemed like a decent twist on the usual WW2 formula that was pervasive at the time — of course since then others like Call of Duty have totally cashed in on the winning formula of war and zombies, so I don't think it's quite the original thing it once was and in all honesty the kids of today would probably think RtCW was copying from CoD. Interested to see if there's still life in the old IP, though. It is like the most old school of old-school FPS games so you'd think everyone would be salivating about the idea of a new one, but I'm guessing not. Quote
mjens Posted June 21, 2012 Report Posted June 21, 2012 Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a different story, really nice game. I wish to see the new Wolfenstein like RtCW. Quote
Erratic Posted June 21, 2012 Report Posted June 21, 2012 RTCW Vanilla MP still the best MP. None of that enemy territory wolfenstein hud edition. New wolf was alright. I dug it for the most part. Quote
Puddy Posted June 21, 2012 Report Posted June 21, 2012 Loooooved RTCW MP... Would love to see a good sequel. Quote
Sprony Posted June 21, 2012 Author Report Posted June 21, 2012 The last Wolfenstein had some nice ideas and some impressive levels, but overall it was a mediocre and even a bad game. The AI was horrible. Some of the worst I've seen. Seriously, you could snipe one of two soldiers that were talking to each other and the one that remained wouldn't notice. It was ridiculous. Combine that with constant backtracking, poor voice work, shallow upgrade features, crappy story and there's not much left. They also imported a lot of things from COD. If I remember correctly, the minimap and the grenade indicators were almost identical. I didn't even finish it. I think I was halfway through and just got sick of it. RTCW is one of the greatest shooters I've ever played. Definitely in my Top 5. Awesome game! They shouldn't add stuff to shooters simply to make them sound more interesting. Because if you look at the last Wolfenstein and Rage, you got a lot of extra features but most of them were stale or poorly implanted and in the end, it did more harm then good. If you going to add something, do it right. Quote
Marvin.Star Posted June 22, 2012 Report Posted June 22, 2012 I didn't play the last one but what I saw and heard made it seem like it had some neat stuff going on despite the fact it felt like a shooter in a pile of shooters. I would be interested in a new one for sure though :derp: Quote
Izuno Posted June 22, 2012 Report Posted June 22, 2012 Loooooved RTCW MP... Would love to see a good sequel. Yes. And Wolfy Enemy Territory...bravo! Probably my favorite MP shooter game of all time...especially on a LAN at the office....zomg! As for a sequel...i have to say WW2 + occult...really interesting occult... = win. I'm so bored with zombies. Quote
