Survey regarding Goals in Computer Games...volunteers needed

Greetings,

I am currently a student study studying Computer Games Design at University, and of need of some volunteers to carry out a survey. The aim of this electronic survey is to understanding and explaining the preference for a variety of goal choices, in relation to self-determination and achievement orientation theories in current generation gamers.

It is a three part questionnaire focusing on player goal orientation, and open to individuals with any experience in playing any current Computer Game, on any gaming platform. The questionnaire should take no more than 15 minutes, and ONLY ONE questionnaire needs to be completed. You must be aged 18 and above, due ethics and age rating boundaries. Any confidential information will be kept under strict confidence covered under the data protection act, with anonymity given to all those surveyed.

Please answer ALL questions as accurately as possible. Answer as you really are, not as the person you would like to be, or how you think others view you. There are no right or wrong answers. If you are unsure with an answer, choose the answer that is most appropriate. Some questions may appear to be similar, but this is the manor of the questionnaire and the topics it relates to. All questions should be answered as if they were unique, and not in reference to questions perceived to be related. Please click on the link below to begin the survey

Thank you very much for your time and your help is greatly appreciated. Once all research has been gathered I will be quite happy to post the results on this thread allowing for further discussion on the topic.

Thank very much to those who have filled out the questionnaire. Have reached a current total of 155 completed surveys. Do need some more so if you have a quick 10-15 minutes then every reply helps

I filled it in. Some feedback; some of the questions were hard to understand. And a lot of them seemed like duplicates.

2. When playing a computer game...My aim is to avoid performing poorly compared to others

4. When playing a computer game...My aim is to perform better than the other players

6. When playing a computer game...My aim is to avoid doing worse than other players

8. When playing a computer game...I strive to do well compared to other players

10. When playing a computer game...I strive to avoid performing worse than others

12. When playing a computer game...My aim is to perform well relative to other players

Those are all from the same page of a 12-question section. Couldn't those be condensed into just one question?

he wants to make sure you're not a bot.

What he did make sure is that I got so bored with the questionnaire that I didn't finish it. Insta makes a very good point. There are too many duplicate questions or questions that are terribly worded.

Example:

"When playing a computer game...My goal is to avoid learning less than it is possible to learn"

"When playing a computer game...My aim is to avoid learning less than I possibly can"

This doesn't even make any sense.

IIRC this is some kind of survey technique to see if the user is consistent or something

if that is the case, it's probably better that the questions are concealed better than just having the same wording, and having a larger spread between them.

just filled it out because the subject matter is something that i deeply care about so ihope the results get released.

my bottom line is :

-more feedback is always better

-main characters with strong personal motivation > getting a mission assigned

-the overarching goal should be clear and be something that me the player can care about too.

there used to be this game nobynoby boy from the katamari creators i loled my ass off at the trailers and was super hyped for it and baught it day1 but the lack of a goal made me get bored / pissed off at the game within 10 minutes and i regreted the purchase ever since.

in germany we have this saying: der weg ist das ziel!

which translates to the voyage IS the goal. and although i agree with that for games the fact remains that if there is no goal than there is also no voyage and than right there that saying dissapears up its own paradoxical ass.
