We recently finished our first closed beta test, and we’re now ready to hold progressively larger events. In February we’ll invite select press to participate in beta testing, and in March and April we’ll aggressively ramp up the size of our beta test events so that many of you will have a chance to participate. And of course, this all leads to the release of Guild Wars 2 later this year.

Yeeees, Guild Wars 2 is finally entering the open beta phase. I am very excited for this, after trying the disappointment known as SW:TOR and longing for something new since I quit WoW a year ago, as this is feels very different for once. It's an MMO with Action RPG mechanics (think Diablo), dynamic events replacing the old talk-to-NPC-for-quest system, cross-profession skill combos, adhoc grouping (you don't have to be in a party to complete objectives or kill mobs together to get full credit), NO SUBSCRIPTION FEE just like GW1, and more. Another beauty is that ArenaNet wants to do something about the old fashioned "Holy Trinity", which means Tank-Healer-DPS.

And instead of writing walls of text for you, here's a wall of VIDEOS instead that show off and explain the game a lot : (it's all copypasta really from information that has been gathered so far)

We purposely didn’t use the term “Open Beta”, we mentioned Beta Events. To some people Open Beta means unlimited access to the game and everybody on the interwebs can play it. This is not what we will do.

We will do Beta Weekend Events. Those of you who played Guild Wars might already be familiar with the concept. It means that many of you (like the blogpost says) will get a chance to participate in specific Events, but access won’t be unlimited – there will be some kind of selection criteria and the beta period will usually start on a Friday and end on the following Sunday.

I hope this helps.

Lets hope it'll be much more accessable than the SW:TOR beta was.

Closed beta invites have now been given out to the press (IGN, Destructoid, Curse, etc), and their NDA is lifted on 20th February. So 2 weeks from now we'll have an explosion of first impressions and even more information on the game, and hopefully some of them will flesh out the wiki, as there is barely any info on the Mesmer profession.

I'm going to be honest, I've not played an MMO yet that's managed to hold me for any significant length of time — but this looks excellent. Visually it's wonderful, something I remember Guild Wars 1 could lay claim to. The gameplay also looks much more palatable to me, with real-time combat by the looks of it and a less contrived approach to quest structure. The world also just generally looks like a really nice place to immerse yourself in, and I hope there's lots of fun incidental stuff (like you might find in, say, Fable).

Definitely keeping an eye on this. :-D

It doesn't only look amazing, it also seems to do all the right things and be very much different to WoW. It's been a while that I was initially excited about it and it's looking better than ever. Might even make me play an MMO again! :D:hurry:

I played Guild Wars with a group of friends and it was a blast. But the one thing I didn't like so much was that you got to level 20 so fast, I kinda like levelling. Looking forward to this one though.

Engineer: An adventurer profession. Uses guns, both pistols and rifles, as well as a number of technological gadgets for offense, healing, and control. They can place turrets down on the battlefield, equip backpack kits that allow them to use mines, grenades, tools, and medicine, and equip new weapons into their hands using weapon kits, from flamethrowers to "pulling" cannons.

That's me sold on this game right there.

i don't know, it's kind of hard to beat the ranger's ability to torch a field and the fire arrows through it to let them catch the flames.

After playing numerous mmo's because of cool bullet points where I've dreamed up how the feature is gonna be so awesome only to be smacked in the face with how they really did the feature, then im not gonna get psyched at all before i see this in action myself.

Consider a tad lag (which all mmos got), then all of a sudden arrows that catches fire mid air doesnt really compute anymore.

Did you ever play PlanetSide? That was an MMOFPS and the lag was actually not an issue at all most of the time. They're working on a sequel right now too which should be even more testing considering the added strain of more complicated technology. No idea how they did it but the latency was no worse than you might find in, say, a game of Battlefield. As such I'm definitely of the opinion that real-time action in an MMO is perfectly possible if the developers actually bother to prioritise it, which the Guild Wars 2 guys seem to be doing.

I agree though, having never enjoyed an MMORPG before my breath is most definitely held. But considering how much I've enjoyed some single-player RPGs (mostly Fable and Zelda) I'd love to see a truly epic online on I can actually enjoy.

i'm pretty sure that projectile measurement isn't going to be a problem,as it worked in the original guild wars. i played the first one for a long while, and i have absolute faith that these people can do this stuff right.

Yup I played planetside, and coming from quake (at that time) I felt it was really laggy, but also very fun =) The lag-feeling might have been because i always played quake on lan and you cant really compete with that ping.
