Puddy Posted December 18, 2011 Report Posted December 18, 2011 Hey guys, I'm just wondering if anyone here knows of a good way of creating a EP2-based mod that uses L4D2 assets? As you may or may not know, you cannot create mods using L4D2 as a base at this time (you can only create maps/addons to the game). Right now, I have two options that work: - Asking players to extract the necessary content from L4D2 to the mod folder - Including the assets in the mod installer (copyright woop woop) I tried adding L4D2's steamappid to the gameinfo.txt of the mod as below but since L4D2 uses vpk instead of gcf/ncf I haven't gotten it to work. I've also googled like crazy but have so far been unable to find someone else attempting the same thing. AdditionalContentId { 550 } Any ideas? Can't work with EP2 assets anymore... Quote
madgernader Posted December 20, 2011 Report Posted December 20, 2011 Could you make a mod based off the alien swarm code base? I think it uses the vpk system, so maybe that will work? Quote
Campaignjunkie Posted December 20, 2011 Report Posted December 20, 2011 In practice, I'd recommend just copying the assets over. Valve isn't going to hunt you down for this, and if they do, it'll look really bad for them. Move on from this issue and focus on game / level design instead. Quote
Puddy Posted December 20, 2011 Author Report Posted December 20, 2011 Thanks for the input guys! But I'm afraid that if I'm not able to get all the assets to work properly in the EP2 engine I'll probably go ahead and drop this (skies, rain-effects, some car-models that are custom to L4D2 etc are giving me some troubles). Without these things in my "toolbox" I can't really achieve the goal of the project. It's hard enough since the lighting and so on is pretty outdated in the EP2 version of the engine... Quote
e-freak Posted December 20, 2011 Report Posted December 20, 2011 CryEngine? (rain, skies, car models sounds like a lot of fun ) Quote
Puddy Posted December 20, 2011 Author Report Posted December 20, 2011 Yes, I am looking into that. We'll see! I'll miss the brushwork though. Quote
Sentura Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 i can attest that this is a path that will move you towards suicide. doing stuff like this is exceptionally frustrating. Quote
