Jenn0_Bing Posted October 9, 2011 Report Posted October 9, 2011 This has been a 3 week project for me so far. The reason I started this project was to tackle a few “firsts” as far as my art pipeline and abilities are concerned. Up to this point I had never touched (in any real depth,) a 3D sculpting app, hand-painted stylised textures or done any work with a “fantasy” theme. So with those conditions in place I weighed up some options and eventually settled on creating an environment based upon a Victorian Graveyard. I was at first inspired by Games Workshops relatively recent Gardens of Morr scenery set, but my path has slowly diverged from this initial artistic spark. At the moment I've assembled the pieces I have completed so far into something of a "Mini Scene," the idea of which is to test the direction I am heading in. This will also serve as a temporary demonstration of these new found abilities on my Portfolio while I work on creating a larger hopefully more impressive environment in the same style. I chose to also have my first experiment with the Marmoset Toolbag to present this piece, which I have decided is a fantastic bit of kit. So enough blabber, here’s some artwork! First up is a turntable render straight from Marmoset, be sure to watch in HD: And here are the stills from the video in better-than-YouTube quality (clicky). Let me know what you think. Like I say, I plan for this to go in my portfolio so I'd like it to make as good an impression as is possible. There are some WIP posts up on my (rather new) blog here: http://www.oggyart.com/blog and if anyone wants to know anything specific I’ll try my best to answer you. Thanks for your time. Quote
cardo Posted October 9, 2011 Report Posted October 9, 2011 Looks cute! I don't like the way the sides of the wall hang over the base area at the moment, so maybe make it a little wider so it doesn't float off? Really like the cartoony texture style though. The area behind the fence is a bit lifeless and could use something. Maybe a skeleton propped against it or some ivy growing up from behind. Would also be nice if the fence had a big cemetery gate in the middle of it that was open, bridging the front and back areas more. Some mushrooms or foliage would also help spice it up I reckon. Great work so far! Oh, ignore the ivy idea.. seems it was there all along go for mushrooms! Quote
Tschoppo Posted October 9, 2011 Report Posted October 9, 2011 reminds me of Warcraft and looks very professional Quote
knj Posted October 9, 2011 Report Posted October 9, 2011 I'm not in to this type of env but i like it a lot, as someone above said this has that warcraft feel but i would add some more stuf behind a fence like stone crosses ect to make it more busy Quote
Jenn0_Bing Posted October 9, 2011 Author Report Posted October 9, 2011 Thanks for the comments guys. Mushrooms are a great idea, and an obvious choice too . I'll find some other bits to help make the back side a little more interesting for sure. Quote
cincinnati Posted October 9, 2011 Report Posted October 9, 2011 nice work. why not play up the cut the turntable makes in the earth to surprise us with something buried under there...? Quote
Grinwhrl Posted October 9, 2011 Report Posted October 9, 2011 Love it man! Perfect piece for October. Quote
Jenn0_Bing Posted October 16, 2011 Author Report Posted October 16, 2011 I've been working on the improvements. Just finished a few bits of dead wood to incorporate into the foresty space I have planned for behind the railing. Gonna feature mushrooms and bracken and the likes when I'm done with it. I like the idea of showing something buried under the ground at the back, may have to do something akin to all those cartoon sequences that travel down through the earth. Quote
cardo Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 Ahh I love the tree stumps! Looks like you've put a lot of effort into what could've been a far simpler model. Like how the bark sticks up past the stump. Really wanna see the scene expanded even further now! Quote
knj Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 yeah, the trees stumps are just great, love the cartoonish style, good work Quote
KoKo5oVaR Posted October 20, 2011 Report Posted October 20, 2011 Awesome !! The assets look great ! I often have that crit, but maybe it's just my tastes, all the assets are very monochromatic and don't seem to share a common color hue; the grass is green, the earth is brown, the tombs are grey etc etc ... It's cool because maybe it's the cartoonish style you want to give to the scene, but i find the lighting doesn't give justice to your great assets Quote
Jenn0_Bing Posted October 22, 2011 Author Report Posted October 22, 2011 So here is a big update! I spent the last week working like mad on all the new foliage pieces I’ve added. The largest part of the work is behind the railings, but I have also done a lot to the front area too. Nearly every asset has got another pass of love. Most of this work was done to bring a greater sense of unity to my colour pallet. Gonna call this done, as now I feel I need to move on to another project for a bit. That is unless anyone has any more awesome advice, otherwise I'll sort this into my portfolio soon. Thanks for the comments again guys, much appreciated. I hope I addressed your colour concerns too Koko, it certainly made an improvement to my eyes. As before, some high-res shots (clicky). Quote
