Jetsetlemming Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 In one day, starting at around 2AM sunday morning, going on for about 12 hours, I'm gonna be underneath Hurricane Irene as it heads up the atlantic coast. Just a couple days ago we had our first noteworthy earthquake in a century and now we get a once in a century hurricane over us. Hopefully the hurricane goes as easily as the earthquake did (my couch just wobbled back and forth for a couple seconds). This does however give me a great excuse to stay in the weekend and play Deus Ex (assuming my power stays on). Quote
Serenius Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 As long as your place was built to withstand hurricanes and you put up shutters, you'll be good. Went through three of those things down in South Florida awhile back. Just hope you have a generator, because if your home is structurally sound, the only part that sucks is being without power for a few days/weeks. Quote

It's about 80 years old and Pennsylvania doesn't get earthquakes or hurricanes or tornados or any shit like that. We get mild floods sometimes, and that's it. My house doesn't even have shutters, just storm windows. Also no generator. This is kinda a short notice hurricane, very inconsiderate. Quote

mjens Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Good luck man. I think you shouldn't stay there, there's an evacuation as I know... Quote
Thrik Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Yeah I think I'd be fucking off for a few days if I were you. Quote

Good luck weathering it out! Quote
Jetsetlemming Posted August 27, 2011 Author Report Posted August 27, 2011 With nine hours to go, the reports for the local weather is looking like 50-70mph winds and heavy rain from midnight to 6AM local time, sunday morning. Predicting lots of downed trees and power lines. Going without power sucks At least the pump in my basement to protect against flooding has backup batteries. Quote
2d-chris Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 it's coooming in all seriousness take care, duck and cover Quote
-HP- Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 So you decided to stay? Anyway, good luck dude, hang tight!! Man... the US has some serious volatile shit weather from time to time, I'm 26 and the worst thing I saw here in Europe was strong rain, lol. Quote
Jetsetlemming Posted August 27, 2011 Author Report Posted August 27, 2011 I'm 23 and this WEEK had my first earthquake and hurricane. I can't afford to run. No car, and they shut down public transportation, and the outer edge of the hurricane goes all the way to harrisburg, over two hours' drive away (if I could drive). I've made a giant crock pot full of beans/rice/beef for cooked food during the potential power outage (my stove uses electricity to spark fires for the burners, but I can circumvent that with matches to reheat stuff). Put plastic sheets over the bigger windows, like the living room bay window. I'm feeling confident. Also apparently the last time any hurricane at all hit our area was in 1989, 22 years ago. Power was off for seven days. Hopefully this time shit goes better. Quote
Duff-e Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 If you're in NYC don't worry nothing is going to happen. Everyone is just jerking off to disaster porn. The evacuation and MTA shutdown is just Bloomberg covering his ass after fucking up the blizzard last winter. I would only seriously be worried in a rural area. Quote
