tr0nic Posted August 5, 2011 Report Posted August 5, 2011 Hey everyone! I'm new here on Mapcore. Been on interlopers for a while but this place seems more professional and all your work really rocks. I'm going back to school in september ( Bachelor program in 3D for video games ) and I want to add a second monitor to my workstation in order to increase my productivity. I currently own a Dell S2409W (TN panel) and i'm really pleased with it. I would like to know if you guys have a preference between TN panels and IPS panels for game development. Do you care about it or not? 23 or 24 inches? Viewangle important when using dual monitors (triple monitor?) IPS are said to have better colour accuracy while TN are better for gaming. Adjustable stand or not? Response time (ms)?! If you have any suggestions for great monitors 23'' to 24'' at a decent price <350$ CAN preferably. Which monitor is widely used in game studios?! IPS? TN? no one cares? Thank you for your time! Quote
Thrik Posted August 5, 2011 Report Posted August 5, 2011 I've not encountered a single TN that can touch the colour accuracy and general quality of my S-PVA monitor at home. My IPS screen at work is definitely superior still but the difference is nowhere near as 'whoa' as that between TN and S-PVA. The only advantage TNs enjoy is a lack of latency, in every other respect they are vastly inferior — although a good TN is still going to seem amazing compared to a crappy average consumer TN. Quote
Minos Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 Have you tried one of the newest TPS models from Dell? My cousin has one and man, they are at least 30% brighter than my current IPN screen. Not counting the color range, Dell says it can displays 20 million colors more than the old S-PPN models. If you still can't see any difference between the TPS and the S-PPN models then you need to check the lighting on your screen as it may need changing.. or you may need glasses. Hope this helps! Quote
tr0nic Posted August 6, 2011 Author Report Posted August 6, 2011 Thanks for your replies. By TPS do you mean IPS? I'm really interested by this monitor: Ultrasharp U2311H http://accessories.dell.com/sna/products/Monitors_Flat_Panel_Widescreen/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&sku=320-9270&~ck=bncat&~bk=gr:CategoryRec_default,g:RecentPopular,rk: It was on sale until yesterday at 219$ CAN I Should have ordered it .. Now it's back at full price @ 319$ CAN. S-PVA monitor look even harder to find than IPS and they are costly. and I have glasses Quote
2d-chris Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 sometimes I dunno why artists insist on awesome monitors when all their work gets covered in post process crap anyway oh and for game development your better off getting an average tv than pc monitor *for checking colors and overall composition* that being said you do need dual monitors in a perfect world they would be matched Quote
Jake Gilla Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 Thank you for this thread, did not realize that all monitors are not created equally. Edit: Why would you say dual monitors are necessary? Quote
KungFuSquirrel Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 Ultrasharp U2311H I swear by the Dell Ultrasharp line. I'm currently using a 2407WFP (though it was destroyed by my 12+ hour days during NS2 so I have some muddy Hammer burn-in) and a 2209WA... I also have dual U2410s at work and I'm currently planning to replace both my monitors here with the U2311 when it's convenient - I'm ready to have the same resolution on both monitors again Going from 16:10 to 16:9 will be a bit of an adjustment, but I can't justify paying twice the money for 2 24s when I'm short on desk space and they're mostly the same anyway. Quick anecdote of Ultrasharp monitor quality - my first 2 Dell monitors were 2001FPs, and at the same time my wife had a non-Ultrasharp 19" LCD that looked like a dim muddy mess in comparison. When I put the 2407 next to the 2001, the 2001 looked like that crappy little 19. When I got the 2209, the 2407 looked like the crappy 19. I think you'll be pleased. Edit: Also, I've been following the 2311 price for a while - they've had it on sale about 3 different times now, but I missed it each time. Just refresh the page daily and I'm sure you can get the lower price again soon Quote
Puddy Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 It's the screen I have. Can't say anything bad about it all! Beats the living snot out of all the cheap TN-panels that are currently pumped out... that I've seen anyway... Quote
Gloglebag Posted August 13, 2011 Report Posted August 13, 2011 TN is good for seeing how your game is gonna look on gamers monitors. Quote
Jetsetlemming Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 I'm a plebian using one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6824001245 It suits my needs unless I feel like slouching, which takes me out of the good viewing area and screws up the picture. Quote
bsmiths18 Posted November 3, 2011 Report Posted November 3, 2011 I would love to try an IPS, for their colour accuracy and what not, plus the Dell Ultrasharps has the best base adjustability out there. Quote
