Tailgunner Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 de_volare, dammit I was furious when I first saw that map, looked so fucking good! (still does, actually) Then I begged for the wad, got it and made a clone what happened to illa / b@tman? he made like 3 of the coolest CS maps ever, I loved volare, the city level (dont remember the name) and I remember how awesome I thought the laguna map looked when the first screens came out. Mazy Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 Hmmm no idea, kinda hope they got into games tho, they were completely owning the CS scene for a while Quote
Algor Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 No cs_backalley? D: Though I did seem to like a lot of the more obscure maps like cs_forest with the hilarious turret at the end that would gib people. Fun to look through all these, good times! Pretty clear though why the successful ones emerged as they did (simple layout, bright world, easy to read texture set). Quote
Minos Posted May 25, 2011 Author Report Posted May 25, 2011 We should have a CS:S mapping contest one day Quote
D3ads Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 ":y6k3v3ga]Guess I'm the only one here that barely touched Hammer editor! Also, remenber guys that modding wasnt gldsource exclusive back in the days! There was quake, max payne, unreal, etc. all the cool mapperz use goldsource Fxed I don't see *that* big a deal with the modding community numbers, take a look on Moddb's list and you'll still see a heck of a lot of mods being made/released for many different types of games. What doesn't help is that a lot of games today are being ported from the console and thus have no modding support whatsoever =/ It's true that many developers favour indie these days, that much is clear. dux Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 I always thought that de_survivor was the dogs balls, was so atmospheric and played quite well at the same time. de_piranesi was also a luscious sight, fantastic looking map. And I always loved how dark and moody de_storm was too. My top 5 in order of WHOA factor: de_survivor de_piranesi de_museum de_chateua cs_havana My top 5 in order of DAMN NICE GAMEPLAY de_dust2 de_inferno de_aztec de_nuke cs_italy Fucking 2000/3 man, epic. Sentura Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 i thought chris auty was pretty good at making cs maps back in the day, i must have been the only one to really like cs_thunder. my all time fav is italy though. and i thought piranesi sucked balls. sure it had visuals, but it was so boring. mjens Posted May 27, 2011 Report Posted May 27, 2011 Anyone from Q1 mapping scene? I remember some great mappers from 1996-2000 on Q1 scene, some of them are still active like bal or lunaran. For me, Q1 was a golden era of mapping. Now it's more complicated to make a good custom level... Quote
Campaignjunkie Posted May 27, 2011 Report Posted May 27, 2011 I guess I agree with all the nostalgia for HL1... but what constitutes a golden age, exactly? Tremendous output? Consolidated communities? 3 Great People in the same city? I think the amount of maps being made overal is roughly the same, maybe more since anyone can just double-click "Source SDK" and get started. The scene is more fragmented -- Mapcore, Interlopers, TWHL, Mapping-Area, etc... and some of the big ones kind of floundered, like Snarkpit, Wavelength, VERC... Don't know what's up with HL2world these days... Anyway, who's to say in 5 years we won't be saying, "remember how great MapCore used to be, with that Door Challenge and stuff?" Quote
Pampers Posted May 27, 2011 Report Posted May 27, 2011 Exactly. Also, isn't facepunch and garry's mod scene still pretty huge? Quote
