Ah yes... the good old times. When everything was so cheap to make and every possible mod idea was in production.

I was around 12-13 at the time :) Had a shitlong mapping hiatus after that, until I started working on my failed TF2 map and Precursor.

btw... does anyone have bright.wad? You see, I actually found one of my old maps re-mirrored here after googling it http://www.gamefront.com/files/1896336/CS_UrbanSiege

But apparently you need bright.wad to open it. Any ideas? :D Want my nostalgia-trip!

Is it weird that seeing my work on that site gives me more excitement than my professional work on the webs biggest gaming sites? Guess it's because custom mapping is a one man band :B

Don't think I'll ever top the awesomeness of those days, now you need 20 artists to make something so visually impact-full it changes you forever ;)

Top 5 maps on that list are ...

1) de_volare - incredibly unique, amazing art and full of fun little touches

2) de_clan1_mill - perfect layout and visuals for clan games

3) cs_industrywest - a fine work of art, unique assets and looked like no other industrial map for cs

4) de_karachi01 - amazing texture set, awesome music, fun layout, made podbot waypoints for it :hurg:

5) de_morningstar - godly architecture and textures, made podbot waypoints for it :hurg:

de_volare, dammit I was furious when I first saw that map, looked so fucking good! (still does, actually) Then I begged for the wad, got it and made a clone :hurg:

Yeah but that's rapidly improving. It's much easier to make a 100% custom map today than it was when HL2 was released. We now have tools like nDO, Crazybump, CGTextures.com, etc... I can make a "current-gen" material at least 70% faster than I could back in 2005 or something.

I think the hardest part is to find an audience. People only play arena maps now (on CS:S that is).

On the bright side: I released DM_zest on a few sites and got emails from server admins praising the map and even got it pimped as map of the month on a german site. Who could say people still play HL2DM? The community is still out there. It's just a lot more spread.
