Duff-e Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 I didn't make any maps but I agree http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDVhB0jGP7I Quote
Erratic Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 So basically that page is my level design education in HTML form. Goddam. Ivy league motherfuckers. Quote
Puddy Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 Ah yes... the good old times. When everything was so cheap to make and every possible mod idea was in production. I was around 12-13 at the time Had a shitlong mapping hiatus after that, until I started working on my failed TF2 map and Precursor. btw... does anyone have bright.wad? You see, I actually found one of my old maps re-mirrored here after googling it http://www.gamefront.com/files/1896336/CS_UrbanSiege But apparently you need bright.wad to open it. Any ideas? Want my nostalgia-trip! Quote
Izuno Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 Oh man that takes me back. Golden age indeed. Quote
ElectroSheep Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 Can everyone can post all their old map ? Quote
Minos Posted May 25, 2011 Author Report Posted May 25, 2011 The indie community is indeed big now but it's not the same. Indie devs make games to survive. We made maps to have fun back then Quote
Pericolos0 Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 dunno, a lot of indies make games for fun too. the golden age of modding is over but right now it's the golden age of indie games and that's very exciting too I think . Quote
2d-chris Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 Is it weird that seeing my work on that site gives me more excitement than my professional work on the webs biggest gaming sites? Guess it's because custom mapping is a one man band Don't think I'll ever top the awesomeness of those days, now you need 20 artists to make something so visually impact-full it changes you forever Top 5 maps on that list are ... 1) de_volare - incredibly unique, amazing art and full of fun little touches 2) de_clan1_mill - perfect layout and visuals for clan games 3) cs_industrywest - a fine work of art, unique assets and looked like no other industrial map for cs 4) de_karachi01 - amazing texture set, awesome music, fun layout, made podbot waypoints for it 5) de_morningstar - godly architecture and textures, made podbot waypoints for it Quote
Mazy Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 de_volare, dammit I was furious when I first saw that map, looked so fucking good! (still does, actually) Then I begged for the wad, got it and made a clone Quote
Minos Posted May 25, 2011 Author Report Posted May 25, 2011 Don't think I'll ever top the awesomeness of those days, now you need 20 artists to make something so visually impact-full it changes you forever Yeah but that's rapidly improving. It's much easier to make a 100% custom map today than it was when HL2 was released. We now have tools like nDO, Crazybump, CGTextures.com, etc... I can make a "current-gen" material at least 70% faster than I could back in 2005 or something. I think the hardest part is to find an audience. People only play arena maps now (on CS:S that is). On the bright side: I released DM_zest on a few sites and got emails from server admins praising the map and even got it pimped as map of the month on a german site. Who could say people still play HL2DM? The community is still out there. It's just a lot more spread. Quote
ElectroSheep Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 TF2 modding is in a good way too. because of valve putting map in the game, peolple aere very motivated to make map on TF2. Quote
-HP- Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 Guess I'm the only one here that barely touched Hammer editor! Also, remenber guys that modding wasnt gldsource exclusive back in the days! There was quake, max payne, unreal, etc. Quote
