The golden age of mapping

Recommended Posts

Yeah, that period from 2000-2003 was damn good stuff. I always get über nostalgic when I think back on hanging out for hours each day in #mapcore, almost daily playtesting fresh new maps and having an ocean of cool (and often kinda broken :D) mods to check out. Good times~~

It's kinda like when rock and roll was invented or something cool like that :hurg:

Doom

Quake

Duke Nukem 3d

Quake 2

Half-Life

It will never happen again. The golden age!

I am disappointed to have missed that period, I discovered Internet in 2007 only and I really wanted to share my maps before that (with cs1.6 is that I really start modding)

That's cool I kow 80ù of those maps, love snowfacility, one of my favorite :-D

Is there a golden age of modding back in the Quake 2 days?

I liked it when a mod could just be a cool idea and roll with default assets, rather than a "safe" idea with production values rivalling a commercial game for free.

Where everything takes 7 years to create! Needs 300000000ghz processors, tries to emulate realism and looks brown!

but you are in the industry now, aren't you ? you are not making level's/mod's just for the fun of it ?

Thats how it goes, graphics needs to be SUPER UBER COOL n SHIT, we evolve lol :D

The 1999 - 2003 age was a fantastic time for all the major communities, after that it all went downhill :)

I remember we had planetunreal (the planet sites!) with like 200 hosted mod and mapping websites, with an avalanche of community news and new releases every day. And you could actually cook up something outstanding all on your own without spending 40 months in 20 different programs. And if you did well you'd really be noticed, you'd get a set of reviews, map of the week/month/whatever awards, pop up on the news sites and so on... Nowadays the most you can get for making something cool is maybe a Like on Facebook...

Not much left of all of it... Instead the whole thing expanded like crazy and then split up in a bilion small sub communities, dropped modding and got into indie games, and subsequently lost its original level design focus.
