Puddy Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 I've been thinking about what to do next. I plan to start a new project this autumn (in the meantime working on my Maya skills, making smaller maps etc). I haven't had any super-good ideas yet, at least not any that require a small team, so I thought I'd pen down this pretty unoriginal concept I've been playing around with the last few days. While not very original, I think it has some potential; it's more about the crafting method then the actual idea. Comments and input are highly welcome! Hopefully, the basic idea will come across better then the ones promoted by 13 year old team leads on moddb. Shout vigorously at me if the derp is reaching critical levels. NOTHING TO SEE HERE Quote
PogoP Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 I think this sounds like a great idea for a mod, and is something I would be interested in working on when I'm settled in my new job. I like these objective-based games, I think they offer a little more satisfaction than mindless run and gun shooters like CoD, where often you do not have an objective and you do not 'care' for your objective particularly. Jenn0_Bing Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 I agree this does sound like a fairly neat game. I haven't played the Kane and Lynch multiplayer myself, but wasn't that something very similar to this in that? As for the Idea, why limit the options to the robbers so much. You could present the robbers with a few options in stage 1 (front door, back door, tunnel etc.) then limit their options by stage 2 slightly (something like through the admin section or through services areas.) Then by the time they got to stage 3 their only option would be to enter the vault and rob it. Would also play nicely into the balance between teams, as the security would slowly be able to focus their players more and more to one location. The moral system is particularly interesting, it may be tricky to balance it so a player doesn't feel too cheated in some situations. A method for raising moral would be useful. If a player could raise their moral by suppressing the enemy shooting at them fire fights would balance out towards the middle meaning the fire fight ended based on player skill rather than advantages gained from suppression. The attacking player would still have an advantage at the start of the bullet exchange, but if he misused that opportunity it would be lost as both became dug-in. Quote

Glad to hear you liked the basic idea! And I agree with you on run and gun shooters; this idea is all about bringing the team together. Kumbay... nvm! I agree this does sound like a fairly neat game. I haven't played Kane and Lynch multiplayer either. To be fair, translating a bank robbery into gameplay terms will always result in similar objectives etc. Having researched into how K&L actually plays I can safely say this is quite different from their game modes. By limiting robbers I assume you mean force them to spawn at the entrance? I think that giving them several options would heavily enlarge the playable area and de-focus the action and the team effort. If you only have one main path (but with plenty of flanking opportunities) the game will have a natural flow to it. You don't want robbers to split up and run into the security team one at a time. Suppression will need to be tweaked heavily throughout the development process. As you point out, it can cause a lot of gameplay problems. You don't want it to be some nuisance that the players don't respond well to ("why is my screen blurry? I want to shoot dammit"). Also, I wouldn't call suppressing fire skill-less. In order to use if efficiently you must coordinate your teams firepower, manage your personal ammo supply and know how and when to use it. Thanks for the input guys btw! I could've done a much better job at writing the first post so sorry for that. Quote
Surfa Posted May 28, 2011 Report Posted May 28, 2011 Did you actually get anywhere with this? It sounds like something I would be interesting in helping out with once my schedule allows. Quote
Bunglo Posted May 28, 2011 Report Posted May 28, 2011 I was thinking about doing a North Hollywood Shootout mod/map, this sounds like it would be fairly similar to the actual event. I'd be down to help out with models/textures if you get it to that point. Quote
Puddy Posted May 28, 2011 Author Report Posted May 28, 2011 Hey guys! Always fun to see people interested Did you actually get anywhere with this? It sounds like something I would be interesting in helping out with once my schedule allows. As mentioned in the first post, this is something I'm looking at as a possible future project. It hasn't gone into production. I was thinking about doing a North Hollywood Shootout mod/map, this sounds like it would be fairly similar to the actual event. I'd be down to help out with models/textures if you get it to that point. Cool, good to know if/when this kicks off! Quote
