syver Posted March 16, 2013 Report Posted March 16, 2013 Vikings were not fucking around at all. A lot of times they would take psychedelic mushrooms before combat fun fact: i've read that scandinavians in more northern parts used to have their reindeer eat amanita muscaria, so they then could drink the piss of that reindeer. the idea was that the reindeer would filter out all the toxins because they're more resistant to it. it's a bit weird that they (vikings) would bother to use muscaria when it's mostly a deliriant and produces a much less lucid state than the even more available psilocybe semilanceata (which they also used). perhaps the analgesia made it easier for them to berserk. and perhaps the believable hallucinations made them think they really were at the gate of asgard participating in the most epic battle ever. there's really no limits to the suggestibility of delirium... (or psychedelics for that matter) i'm hoping we will see some of it in the series. the introduction scene where he hallucinates valkyries was pretty cool. didn't mythbusters debunk this? fairly sure one episode they have too much of the mushroom and were deemed unfit for fight due to stomach ache and shit. as far as these legends are willing to go, i'm more inclined to believe that their rage was natural did they prepare it? (drying and/or boiling) that would remove the toxins and make it easier to digest without getting stomach ache. anyway, the mentioned semilanceata is much easier on the stomach and shouldn't have given them too much problems. they could have used the piss-method i mentioned. i don't think they necessarily did it for rage, but to give a more spiritiual/religious experience during battle. as you probably know, fighting and dying on the battlefield was the most glorious and spiritual aspect of their life. it could also help them to deal with the fact that they might die. still, i agree that the effects (maybe excluding enhanced/sensitive senses) could easily have made it a lot more difficult for them. Kinky Posted March 16, 2013 Report Posted March 16, 2013 Didnt seem to slow them down much. Didnt one of the ancient south american civilizations do the same in battle? Cant find anything specific about it on Wiki but the Aztecs, Incans and Mayans all used hallucinogens in daily life. And i refuse to believe anyone would go to battle dressed like this if they were sober... ⌐■_■ 1 Quote

Kinky Posted March 16, 2013 Report Posted March 16, 2013 Im not sold on that one. Ive seen people do things on psilocybin that would confuse the hell out of you (if you have no first hand experience of the effects of the drug), such as running faster, jumping higher, and performing skill tasks that they couldnt do without the drug (skateboard/yo-yo/diablo tricks). Never been able to figure out exactly how these things happened. Thinking about it just makes my brain boil. Quote
Puddy Posted March 16, 2013 Report Posted March 16, 2013 Just watched Dredd. Really enjoyed it. It doesn't take itself so seriously and was pretty entertaining. Quote

Grinwhrl Posted March 17, 2013 Report Posted March 17, 2013 (edited) Watched Silver Linings with my wife, turned out to be a great movie actually! 5/5 Edited March 17, 2013 by Dark Quote
blackdog Posted March 17, 2013 Report Posted March 17, 2013 (edited) Yesterday evening I watched The Dark Knight Rises, I wanted to see if a second round at it would change my mind on it: when it came out I wasn't satisfied, I hoped I could blame it on the italian dub. Instead, this time I totally got pissed at it and actually lowered the score I gave it on IMDB :-| I so don't like it, and I don't understand how some people prefear it over TDK. Instead, and to my surprise, the latest episodes of The Big Bang Theory are quite good, the whole 6th season is way better than the 5th. Edited March 17, 2013 by blackdog Quote

Sprony Posted March 18, 2013 Report Posted March 18, 2013 I went to see the new Oz in Imax. I normally don't like 3D but this movie made good use of it and it looked great in Imax. The movie itself was nicely done. It connects to the original which is quite a surprise since it's been like, 70 years or so. I love the art and the different styles (dark, bright, normal, over the top, etc). It's still Disney, so you can expect and sweet ending and a moral tale to it but still, it's enjoyable. CGI doesn't take over and is used well. Franco is great, Rachel Weisz is enjoying herself only Mila Kunis is pretty weak in this. But yeah, Raimi did a good job. Now gives us Evil Dead 4! Quote
Puddy Posted March 18, 2013 Report Posted March 18, 2013 A pretty good ep of Walking Dead... I'm so effing curious to see what's next!!! Quote
