⌐■_■ Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 Congrats on the job, it sounds interesting Maybe us non-industry people should start our own "Where we work"-thread edit; I work at Kongsberg Protech, dealing with the software for the Kongsberg Protector (Remote Weapon Station) THAT. -HP- Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 So when mapcore is not making games for a living, it's making high-tech killing machines with the press of a button! ;D Quote
Thrik Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 Skjalg wins the 'Best Job of MapCore' award designing remote-powered sentries, however twiz is surely a close runner-up being deeply involved with the US nuclear program. I have a similarly exciting job, being a web designer/front-end developer for some Nottinghamshire web design agency. .............. Quote
dux Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 .............. I don't know why that made me laugh so much. I blame the sad smiley. Quote
twiz Posted January 19, 2011 Author Report Posted January 19, 2011 Not just the US, we've got a job coming up in korea But I agree, remote control sentry gun robot > remote control reactor scanner robot Quote
Pericolos0 Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 Building robots for a living, that's some pretty damn cool jobs Quote
Skjalg Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 Haha guys. The job looks cooler than it actually is Programming in c isn't as cracked up as you'd think it is (hahaahha its not even cracked up). I mean the first few weeks were very cool. Toying around with killing machines; especially when we were out shooting with them. But after a few weeks its like a boring programming job. You sit at your desk in your office and work on some piece of code someone, who has probably left the company now, wrote 10 years ago and noone else wants to touch. You're not in charge of anything design wise, since everything you do is either an old bug that the customer (US army) wants to get nailed or it is some new functionality that is first asked for by the customer, then reviewed by management, then detailed by your department leader and then assigned to you. Monkey see, monkey do. Which is why at the end of the day I dream of getting home and work with c# in unity and forget all about pointers and memory handling and just have fun with game play Usually tho, I get so sleepy that I almost kill myself when driving home from work because I'm not getting enough sleep. So when I get home I either try to stay awake to not ruin a nights sleep but then I dont get to do any work because I'm exhausted. Or I do as I do today and sleep a few hours after work and try working on my game until a couple of hours past midnight. Quote
Sentura Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 i hope you've at least got some debugging software that works. segfaults are the most useless error message i've ever known Quote
Skjalg Posted January 20, 2011 Report Posted January 20, 2011 We don't. "PAGE FAULT" with a loads of random numbers after it is just printed to the console and I have to scratch my head and cry a little inside. It might be the code I wrote now, last week or the code that someone wrote 10 years ago that theres something wrong with Only way to check is to comment out huge parts and try again to narrow it down... Zacker Posted January 20, 2011 Report Posted January 20, 2011 I would just like to join in on the love for killing machines and nuclear reactors Quote
st0lve Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 Skjalg, the guys I know who have tried the RWS like it, but you should make another system which can fix failure to fire and jams Oh, and send me some cool stuff! http://noratactical.com/ I'm self-employed at the moment, I sew custom tactical gear. For those who you that don't really know what it's about, it's like a military tailor, so that your gear is made the way you want it, instead of what you are issued or what you can by from a store. I'm going to set up some "production items" to sell via the website so that I don't have to wait for customers, but for now I'm busy with custom projects. Working alone is really boring, and my income is really low, I'm lucky that I'm able to live at home and borrow the workshop from my dad for free.. I'll let you know when I'm bankrupt Quote
madgernader Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 I have the super sweet job of being a cashier for Safeway (a U.S. grocery store) in Washington state. Been working there part time for a couple years and going to college. No killer sentry programming in here, just some rocking customer service and selling stuff... It gets me an income and keeps me going so far, guess I cant complain, at least I'm employed... Quote
