Vilham Posted January 12, 2012 Author Report Posted January 12, 2012 Its clear that these are not annotations that you made while planning the game/levels presented, and rather some tidbits of info you are adding to further explain your role and work on the projects presented. As such I think a little bit more context as to what the project is and what your role was would help us understand better the meaning of the annotations. For instance, did you design the minecart minigame as a whole? If so your annotations are quite good and convey the basic mechanics of the game. But if your role was of level designer, I think you would benefit more with either a sketch of the level with your though process while designing the level itself, something like: "here in the beginning there are lots of coins and few obstacles" "this section has several obstacles to make for the most challenging part of the level" "at the end there are small pockets of very valuable coins, to reward players that have gone through the challenging part with a moment of relief". Again, if you designed the mini-games, then your annotations are spot on explaining the basics of each gamemode, but I still think you should make it clear you where the game designer in those. And in the personal work section, again, I think just a little context might do wonders to make the annotations meaningful. Crysis: design of a single player level Day of defeat: design of a multi-player level Hal-life 2: environment and atmosphere scene I'm not sold on the format you have chosen, doyou mean to print and take it with you on interviews or send the document in a PDF? I see value in those, but I'd still try to at least have something online, unless you are not actively looking for a job =) Indeed they are meant to explain the basics to people that might have no idea about these games and mechanics. Yeah I see what your saying about the role. I had total control over the levels in kinect disneyland adventure (as far as Microsoft/constraints would allow it), I hope that that is explained in my CV, I may add an explanation to that effect in the portfolio as well though. For the personal thing I was thinking the exact same thing last night after I put it up. Im going to put all three pages together into a PDF and email it with the CV and cover letter. The problem is that I legally can not put page 1 and 2 up online, which severely limits my portfolio. Thanks for the feedback. Quote
Vilham Posted January 12, 2012 Author Report Posted January 12, 2012 I don't think the notes provide that much insight either. I would go for ordinary screens and use an accompanying, not necessarily long, article explaining your work method and reasoning imho. I wanted to steer away from an paragraphed notes etc. I think to get an interview you want your portfolio and CV to be pretty to the point, the interviewer probably has to view dozens of CVs and won't spend ages reading your blurb. I'm confident when it comes to an interview I can give a lot more information as to why something might be the way it is. Its why I like environment artist portfolios so much, they are just to the point, obviously with design that's harder as you need to provide some explanation of what you are showing. What I'm attempting (succeeding or failing) to show is a minimal amount of reading that properly explains something. Quote
Vilham Posted December 27, 2013 Author Report Posted December 27, 2013 So have been working on updating my portfolio, still have more projects to add but wanted to check if you guys think the format is alright. http://www.willjosephy.com/ Quote
Mazy Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 I'd just use one font instead of two, looks a bit weird to me. Also maybe give it some space between the text and the images, seems a bit too crammed together. Otherwise I think it works quite well~ Quote
blackdog Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 The only place where i see 2 fonts is in the Ryse page, and only the "Role" title, i guess it's just an error.Definitely the layout can be polished in regard of typography: bigger font-size needs some more spacing.General layout of the project pages reminds me of the decisions i've taken for mine, but i don't like the hieracy you gave to the titles with this [medium font] platform - [big font] title - [medium font] developer... feels in disorder to me, i'd align titles strictly left and right. Vilham Posted December 29, 2013 Author Report Posted December 29, 2013 I fixed the font thing earlier, that's why you won't have seen it. Can you guys explain the font spacing thing, not quite getting it. Quote
TermInator525 Posted December 29, 2013 Report Posted December 29, 2013 as a noscript user i find it a bit irretating that your portfolio needs all these json files. Or let me rephrase this: If i disable js i have a blank white page. Below is the quote noscript gives me: http://www.willjosephy.com/vmBHRjYq949tJYYIRmF4klit5_dLZw5GRb4A637UuLs.eyJpbnN0YW5jZUlkIjoiMTM0MGNhNjEtOTQxOC00MGM2LTZkNjUtZTczMGU4NjUwYzk0Iiwic2lnbkRhdGUiOiIyMDEzLTEyLTI5VDAwOjU5OjA0LjkyNS0wNjowMCIsImlwQW5kUG9ydCI6IjIxNy4yNTMuMjMuMzkvMzc3MTkiLCJkZW1vTW9kZSI6ZmFsc2V9http://wixappslb-2118248334.us-east-1.elb.amazonaws.com/LinkedIn/Prod/linkedin/Indexhttp://wixappslb-2118248334.us-east-1.elb.amazonaws.com/LinkedIn/ProdMobile/linkedin/Indexhttp://www.willjosephy.com/http://www.willjosephy.com/willjosephy.comhttp://www.willjosephy.com/190e26_a2f474aa452a40cbaa92b7b28258df40_fi.icohttp://static.parastorage.com/sites/190e26_0e253ee240543ec1af5ac759b758022b_96.json.z?v=2http://archive.wix.com/sites/190e26_0e253ee240543ec1af5ac759b758022b_96.json.z?v=2http://www.willjosephy.com/sites/190e26_0e253ee240543ec1af5ac759b758022b_96.json.z?v=2http://fallback.wix.com/wix-html-editor-pages-webapp/page/190e26_0e253ee240543ec1af5ac759b758022b_96.jsonhttp://publicorigin.wix.com/wix-public-html-renderer/page/190e26_0e253ee240543ec1af5ac759b758022b_96.jsonhttp://static.parastorage.com/sites/190e26_2b6053c84d6d2c536508141ec319ee83_92.json.z?v=2http://archive.wix.com/sites/190e26_2b6053c84d6d2c536508141ec319ee83_92.json.z?v=2http://www.willjosephy.com/sites/190e26_2b6053c84d6d2c536508141ec319ee83_92.json.z?v=2http://fallback.wix.com/wix-html-editor-pages-webapp/page/190e26_2b6053c84d6d2c536508141ec319ee83_92.jsonhttp://publicorigin.wix.com/wix-public-html-renderer/page/190e26_2b6053c84d6d2c536508141ec319ee83_92.jsonhttp://static.parastorage.com/sites/190e26_6eb07d1192821afa5592f38061dd2038_91.json.z?v=2http://archive.wix.com/sites/190e26_6eb07d1192821afa5592f38061dd2038_91.json.z?v=2http://www.willjosephy.com/sites/190e26_6eb07d1192821afa5592f38061dd2038_91.json.z?v=2http://fallback.wix.com/wix-html-editor-pages-webapp/page/190e26_6eb07d1192821afa5592f38061dd2038_91.jsonhttp://publicorigin.wix.com/wix-public-html-renderer/page/190e26_6eb07d1192821afa5592f38061dd2038_91.jsonhttp://static.parastorage.com/sites/190e26_d50ac0cc231d15c95c60c1c5b705b27d_95.json.z?v=2http://archive.wix.com/sites/190e26_d50ac0cc231d15c95c60c1c5b705b27d_95.json.z?v=2http://www.willjosephy.com/sites/190e26_d50ac0cc231d15c95c60c1c5b705b27d_95.json.z?v=2http://fallback.wix.com/wix-html-editor-pages-webapp/page/190e26_d50ac0cc231d15c95c60c1c5b705b27d_95.jsonhttp://publicorigin.wix.com/wix-public-html-renderer/page/190e26_d50ac0cc231d15c95c60c1c5b705b27d_95.jsonhttp://static.parastorage.com/sites/190e26_e508b6736942498bcb8a08a61065acc0_96.json.z?v=2http://archive.wix.com/sites/190e26_e508b6736942498bcb8a08a61065acc0_96.json.z?v=2http://www.willjosephy.com/sites/190e26_e508b6736942498bcb8a08a61065acc0_96.json.z?v=2http://fallback.wix.com/wix-html-editor-pages-webapp/page/190e26_e508b6736942498bcb8a08a61065acc0_96.json Quote

Kept it the same for a few days, but I think you may be right. my eyes kept being drawn to the top left not the top mid. So I have re aligned the titles. Thx The Jscript thing won't be fixed as it uses a service similar to carbonmade etc but with more control, I guess it uses loads of Java based things. blackdog 1 Quote
selmitto Posted December 31, 2013 Report Posted December 31, 2013 (edited) The CV link on the top (besides LinkedIn) is not working here. I click on it and nothing happens. The LinkedIn takes me to a LinkedIn page, but not any profile... I guess they are there just temporarily, amirite? Edited December 31, 2013 by Al Anselmo~Intelect0 Quote
Vilham Posted December 31, 2013 Author Report Posted December 31, 2013 The linkedIn should actually take you to my page. Ill have to check that, but yeah the CV isn't updated yet so I have left that out. Quote
blackdog Posted January 2, 2014 Report Posted January 2, 2014 Sorry, didn't check Mapcore for a few days; liking it better now! Quote
Vilham Posted June 5, 2014 Author Report Posted June 5, 2014 (edited) Well updated the main page, didn't like having just simple tabs for the projects. Also updated the Ryse and Ryse DLC pages with some dev shots. Inspiration for some of the changes in general from several peoples portfolios. Edited June 6, 2014 by Vilham Quote
