Jetsetlemming
It was working fine for the longest time and then all at once today over the last two hours it's gone from perfect to "artifacting and freezing constantly". I'm back on onboard video which means I pretty much can't run anything.
Chimeray
Those symptoms usually occur when overheating a card. So perhaps dust? Have you checked with a tool that measures temperature? You could also try downclocking your card, if it's possible on your video card... Well, only if the problem is temperature related. Or is it like... permanently broken? Jetsetlemming
It's a three or so year old 8800GT, it was beyond its normal lifespan already. It used to get really hot, like 95C, without artifacting or crashing or anything, and I dusted it and installed Nvidia software to automatically adjust fan speeds based on temp so it hasn't broken 85C in months, with 80C its stable at load temp after the fan kicked up to 100% (I game with RealTemp running, it's set to sound an alarm (sounds like the Star Trek Enterprise enemy ship alarm ) when it goes over 90C). It was perfectly fine yesterday, and then today while I was exploring Nehrim: Edge of Fate (like 8 or 9 hours into it) suddenly the entire screen turned purple and covered in artifacts and it crashed. Trying to troubleshoot it, it would artifact and freeze earlier and earlier. At one point I saw a bluescreen (which got artifacted) saying something about a driver caught in an infinite loop. Eventually it would artifact and freeze right after booting into windows. Taking the card out and going to onboard video made the issue go away instantly, even though my onboard video uses the exact same drivers. So yeah, it's dead. Ordered this as a replacement, because FUCK if I'm going to miss Fallout: New Vegas. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814102855

Buddy
I had 40* idle and 70* stress with my 8800gt and its still working (i'm not using it anymore though) Shame to hear that yours died so suddenly though, RIP.
D3ads
lol at the R.I.P comments. My 7950 GT died a few months ago, so I'm back on my classic 4200 Ti I'm gonna get a new machine eventually though, so replacement is pointless in the meantime. Probably a dual slot cooler, mine was a single slot 8800gt. Those are infamous for how hot they get.

Jetsetlemming
Got my new 4670. It came preattached to an Artic Cooler GPU cooler. The box also had a CG anime lady with visible nipples poking under her shirt, to further emphasize the coldness. The ATI Overdrive portion of the Catalyst suite claims it was 38C right after I closed Crysis to check temps. So far I can't find any better way to do that, Realtemp is ignoring it. So far performance seems pretty good. FRAPs says Crysis (of course I tested with Crysis) is running like 4-5FPS slower than previous (18-19FPS, from 22-24), but it actually feels smoother. Nehrim: Edge of Fate also feels smoother (FRAPs says 25-30FPS for this one).
